Group,

Does anyone do much experimenting with R/C? Since I don't have
too much time, I have combined my hobbies and am flying model planes on
6 meter R/C. I would like to know if much design/modification is done to
the equipment. Recently I bought some used ACE R/C equipment and have had
good results with it. The design is somewhat dated, but I can get all the
diagrams, parts, and help with no trouble from ACE. This is different
from the other import units which charge $5 for a 50 cent control pot.
Also I am eyeing the new computer controlled transmitters, but the $500
plus price is out of my league. Any homebrew ideas in this direction?
Where do I look? The Ham mags have very little on the subject. Does anyone
know where I can get Plessy ICs and data sheets from? The back-of-the-mags
ads suppliers don't seem to carry them. Finally, anything good or bad about
ACE products? The people around here seem to think they are quite good.
The only mod I have done so far is to change the throttle so that
the trim only affects the idle and not the high end. Thanks is advance.

ANYONE WHO OBSERVES THE UPS AND DOWNS OF SOLAR ACTIVITY KNOWS THAT
MONTHLY CHARTS OF THE SOLAR FLUX AND OTHER WWV DATA WILL SHOW
CONSIDERABLE SIMILARITY FROM ONE MONTH TO THE NEXT, MORE OFTEN THAN
NOT. THE AUTHOR OF THESE BULLETINS HAS CHARTED THE WWV SOLAR FLUX,
A INDEX AND K INDEX MONTHLY SINCE 1974.

THESE CHARTS SHOW CONSIDERABLE SIMILARITY, PARTICULARLY IF DRAWN SO
THAT 27 OR 28-DAY INTERVALS LINE UP VERTICALLY, MAKING THE SUNS
ROTATIONAL PERIOD MORE OBVIOUS. A SERIOUS FORECASTER WILL KNOW THAT
THE ROTATIONAL PERIOD OF THE SUN IS NOT TOTALLY RELIABLE, HOWEVER.
OUR SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER CHARTS SHOW A TYPICAL RECURRENCE IN
OCTOBER. AN EXTREME DISIMILARITY IS ALSO PLAIN TO SEE. A SECOND
PEAK, IN THE OCTOBER CHART, COMES UP DIRECTLY ABOVE A DEEP VALLEY IN
THE SEPTEMBER ONE.

NOTETAKING IS ALSO USEFUL, ESPECIALLY WHEN A NEW ACTIVE AREA
APPEARS, AS IN THE PAST WEEK. THE RARE ALIGNMENT OF THE SUN, EARTH
AND MOON MENTIONED LAST WEEK, APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR
VERY MARKED CHANGES IN THE PROPAGATION PICTURE IN THE PAST FEW DAYS.
MORE CONVENTIONAL PROPAGATION APPEARS LIKELY FOR THE FORECAST WEEK.

AMERICAN SUNSPOT NUMBERS FOR OCTOBER 12 THROUGH 18 WERE BETWEEN 169
AND 236 WITH A MEAN OF 205.7. AR

Subject: Aviation Radio: Info Required

I'm pretty familiar with the use of Voice comms over radio in the aviation
world, however (as I'm also a radio nut :-), I'd like to learn more about:

VOR, DME, IM/MM/OM, NDB, TACAN, ILS, MLS

(and any other uses of radio for aviation purposes).

Would any of you care to post explanations of how these wonderful things work?
I'll summarise if there's interest.

Thanks in advance

The Sonoma County RACES net was started very shortlt after the
shake by a net controller at his home. The OES Emergency Operating
Center position was established at 18:15 with two operators: a command
net and a resource assignment net. About a dozen mobile stations were
deployed to assess the damage to roads and services within Sonoma
County. By 19:30, it was clear that this county had minimal damage,
and the net was turned over to traffic with bay area stations.

The California Department of Forestry Volunteers-In-Prevention
(CDF-VIP) radio net was assembled (with many of the same RACES
operators) and they worked throughout Tuesday night to set up radio
links with amateur CDF stations in the Santa Cruz mountains. These
hams carried emergency requests as well as health and welfare traffic
until the net was closed at 19:00 on Saturday night. In addition,
they passed traffic on the Northern California UHF linked repeater
system (440.5 MHz), which was primarily used as a link between the
state OES headquarters in Sacramento and OES and Red Cross stations in
the affected areas.

Some Sonoma County hams also traveled to Alameda County to act
as communications resources for the rescue base set up at the I-880 collapse.

All told, I thought the traffic was fairly productive and
organized once the initial logistics were worked out. There was a
dose of confusion, but I think it was small given the conditions.
There was, in my opinion, too much non-willful interference on 2m from
stations passing unimportant traffic (ie chewing the rag) on or near
important frequencies. Also: a high speed digital net (de N6GN) and
the appropriate end stations would have been neat to see...

I am looking for any and all information on a Telemobile Inc,
Commercial 440 rig. I have no information on this radio, I just
purchased it at a Hamfest. Telemobile is somewhere in California
probably L.A. I need control head schematics and probably radio
drawings as well. Any information would be appreciated.

Subject: Internet DXing

Having just seen an electronic mail message from a country
whose two-letter abbreviation I don't recognize and couldn't
guess from context, I've decided to try for DXCC (and WAS,
for that matter) via Internet. (The ultimate Internettish
thing would be WAD, Worked All Domains, but domains are
created far more often than countries.)

To invent some rules:
1. Messages exchanged via bulletin boards don't count: the
messages must be exchanged via mail. It's perfectly ok
to post CQ's to bulletin boards, but there must be two-
way communication via mail to qualify as a contact.
(If this game gets too popular, we may need to set up a
separate bboard for it, lest INFO-HAMS/rec.ham-radio
   become an unusable pileup!)

2. In lieu of signal reports, QSL messages should include
the text AND HEADERS of the message being replied to.
This provides propagation information, such as the number
of relay stations and the number and kind of mail protocols
   involved in the conversation.

3. A completed contact should be a message that looks like this:

j From: Ed
j To: Faraway-Joe

e From: Faraway-Joe
e To: Ed

x From: Ed
x To: Faraway-Joe

x I saw your CQ in INFO-HAMS; here's a response from
x Burlington, Massachusetts USA.

e Thanks for the response Ed, I'm in Farawayville,
e Neverneverland.

j Here's your confirmation, Joe.
The message marked x is an initial call, it doesn't count
(unless you want to play by SWL rules, in which case it counts
for Joe.) The lines marked e (with the included lines marked x)
form a completed contact for Ed: it's proof positive that he
communicated with Joe. The lines marked j (with all the included
lines) form Joe's completed contact. The actual format (order,
indenting, etc.) of the information doesn't matter.

4. Of course, you can include whatever other information you want
in your messages, like your rig (Sun-3/60 w/8meg or whatever),
   other hobbies/interests, weather, latitude/longitude/altitude,
whether you're operating from the home or work QTH, etc.

So, CQ IDX (Internet DX) de Ed@Stony-Brook.SCRC.Symbolics.COM,
in Burlington, MA USA!

Is there any kind DXing or media-oriented mailing list around? I think that
rec.ham-radio is not a very proper place to publish programme schedules and
other such information.. I might be interested in putting up such mailing

Smitty (W3GKP- SK) was also on one end of the first 2304 EME QSO, with
a large dish and 1kW Klystron courtesy of the MARS program- this was
back in 1970. The Klystron, a Varian VA-802, now resides at the shack
of Al Ward WB5LUA and has a small plaque on its magnet commemorating
the feat. It is used with great respect regularly.

Sigh. The list of the pioneers who have joined the ranks of the Silent
Keys is rather staggering, indeed. Just saw some pix at our most
recent Rochester VHF Group meeting of Mel Wilson, W2BOC and his station,
describing some of the methods he used to predict VHF propagation
enhancements- especially Aurora, years ago.
