AERONAUTICAL COMMUNICATIONS ________________________________________________________ An online reference source Compiled by Al Quaglieri, NN2U AERO COMMUNICATIONS: All commercial carriers navigate established flyways in the sky. Although invisible to the eye, these air routes, defined by geographical coordinates, are much the same as automobile highways. At predetermined positions along these flyways, aircraft are required to report in to a ground station. Those stations involved primarily with domestic or regional flights are designated "Flight Service Stations." The long range route stations are called "International Flight Service Stations." each of these FSS or IFSS air traffic control (ATC) facilities have geographical boundaries assigned to them, creating Major World Air Route Areas. Any aircraft flying within or through a MWARA must establish a "guard" with that ground facility. The bulk of traffic you hear on the HF aero frequencies concerns the air route progress of an aircraft, while on a particular flyway. Normally, the data passed consists of: position, time at position, next estimated position, time of arrival at next estimated position, and flight level. During "guard" changes, the pre-filed flight plan information is given. This includes departure point/time, destination, and estimated time of arrival. It is therefore a simple task for an aircraft buff to chart the progress of a particular airliner from the comfort of an easy chair. As established by international agreement, on all intercontinental oceanic air routes, the mandatory communicative language is English. This does not preclude communications in a language common to both the aircraft and the ground station, such as French between Air France and Papeete, or Spanish between AeroMexico and Bogota. AIRLINE ID's: Most use their company names, i.e. Air France, Quantas, United, etc. Several airline companies have their own personalized callsigns: CLIPPER - Pan American World Airways SABENA - Belgian World Airlines SPEEDBIRD - British Airways SPRINGBOK - South African Airways FREQUENCY USAGE: En route aircraft, regardless of their position, are rarely ever more than a few thousand miles from the nearest ground station. Thus, there exists little reason for the establishment of long-distance ground-to-air HF comm circuits. This means the selection of frequencies or bands which will propagate either directly or within one hop from the ground station to the aircraft. As a rule of thumb, most comms will occur on the lowest available frequency that can be used at any particular hour, local time. For example, New York might easily communicate with an aircraft in the mid-Atlantic on a frequency of 13306 kHz during midday, EST; as sunset approaches, the same path would use 8825 kHz; and when both the aircraft and New York are in total darkness, the best frequency would be 5598 kHz or even 3016 kHz. Using another example of an aircraft flying over the South China Sea, in communication with Hong Kong ground station: at 1200 hours Hong Kong time (0400 UTC or 2300 EST), comms might use 13300 kHz; by 1900 HKT (1100 UTC or 0600 EST), they may move down to 8903 or 6562 kHz; and by 0000 HKT (1600 UTC or 1100 EST) they might go down as far as 4666 or 2998 kHz. You can see from the above that frequencies are selected for best regional coverage, not for long-distance reception. Combine this with the low transmitting power used by these stations, and you have a real DX'ing challenge. Hearing aero stations from more than 8000 miles distant isn't impossible..it just seems that way! SELCAL, MODES, ETC.: You will often hear aircraft call in for "Selcal check", followed by a phonetic identifier. The ground station punches these phonetic calls into a tone-generating device and then transmits two double tones back to the aircraft. This is to test the SELective CALling system used by major airlines, wherein each aircraft is assigned its own unique tone code; a squelch device connected to the craft's radio mutes all radio communications until it detects that craft's own SELCAL tones; then it turns the receiver audio on and alerts the cockpit of an incoming message. Without using SELCAL, the flight crew would have to actively monitor HF aero frequencies continuously, which would be a great distraction as well as a major chore. Most airborne stations, and all ground stations, transmit using Single Sideband, or SSB mode (although some antiquated aircraft still use AM transmission). Thus, you will need a receiver equipped to hear SSB signals, i.e. one with a BFO or an SSB switch for product detection. The bulk of aero comms are in upper sideband, or USB. Reception of this mode requires a certain degree of receiver stability; on older or cheaper sets, you will need to re-tune periodically to maintain received intelligibility. Both ground stations and aircraft have decent records of verifying reception reports, usually by letter or reporter- prepared postcard. Remember it is illegal to repeat any portion of the monitored communication, so your report should simply state something like, "I heard your ground station in contact with AirFrance 352..," and NOT "You asked the pilot for his next position and he replied with his geographical coordinates." Incidentally, this is a good way to score QSL's from many countries which lack shortwave broadcasting facilities or are otherwise rare catches (see the list at the end). Addresses for the airlines and the ground stations are too numerous to include here, but are available in book form from most major shortwave suppliers.
