PHUC is: Piz Spota *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* News Update 11/11/94 typed by Piz Zart *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* This file is just for some random interesting news which has gathered over the pasy year (yes, it's been that long). Some of this is from 2600, some from word of mouth, some personal, etc.. ---* 800.433.3210: This service allows you to have a "House of Windsor" catalog sent to anyone you choose. Just enter their phone number and off it goes. Oh, did I mention the computer tells you the address of the phone number you entered? There are gaps in the database but unlisted numbers don't appear to be treated any differently than listed ones. ---* phuc hq has moved from N. Chelmsford, Ma to Boston, and thus a new number: 617.424.6645. ---* When I first moved to Boston, I noticed that in Boston only, for some reason, to box a local call I could no longer dial a ld equal access code 10### + number. CJammer mentioned to me that the 411 information service that dials the number for you can be used. If anyone knows why 10### + number doesn't work in town anymore, please tell us! ---* MEL: 800.GO.TO.SWB - Even though we are not in Southwestern Bell's service are, this might be of interest as it's a toll-free call. Mechanised Employee Locator, MEL for short, provides name, phone, address, department and title information for all Southwestern Bell employees. MEL offers a call completion function that will automatically dial any number in the database. MEL also offers reverse-serch capability, meaning you give the phone number, you get the name, address, etc.. To use MEL it's rather simple. Call and follow the instructions. The "company functions" service, which is activated by pressing # at the main menu is fun. It lets you seacrh by keyword for all sorts interesting numbers that it will dial for you. ---* Call Return: Don't want people to be able to use the call return feature to call you back? Pay the $1.50 a month for the call forwarding service, and program a number to forward your calls to whenever you scan, etc. No, I don't believe the per call blocking works for this purpose. If anyone has an absolutely cost-free, or one time cost solution, please tell us! ---* For those of you that need inet accounts (me! me!), here's an idea. Most average to large sized schools have PC labs where students can go to access their shell/VAX accounts. I've noticed, at least for five schools (BU, BC, NU, UML, UMAmherst) that to use the PC's in the labs, no i.d. is required - anyone can use them. Sometimes you need to sign a sheet. Anyway, just go and put a keystroke recording TSR on a couple of the pc's and come back in a day or two. Most likely you'll have a few accounts, and you can *irc* all day you loser! :) ---* IDEA (idea.uml.edu) is a good place to start to go about getting a legit and stable inet account. 617.727.5950. Log on as guest. IDEA is for teachers, etc. only, so when you email the operator for an account, you'll need to sound pretty ligit. I have two accounts there. Just give a real teacher's name and the real # for the school. ---* In case anyone doesn't know, 10000 is also at at&t access code. On some payphones, using this will actually get you a free call, as it doesn't look like a code and the telco forgets to block it. ---* info.bellcore.com : telnet there. Login: cat10, no password. ---* If you have a scanner, listeninsg to cordless phone calls can be fun, and rather informative sometimes.
