"K. O." LEARNER II, K9PVW, SK An old friend to many in the amateur satellite world and long-time AMSAT member, "K.O." LEARNER II (K9PVW) became a Silent Key (SK) recently. "K.O" died on 16-May-94 at his home in Kokomo, Indiana. He was 49. For many years, "K.O." organized the AMSAT booth and programs at Dayton, worked tirelessly as an AMSAT area coordinator, and ran a local AMSAT Net. Also, many will remember him as the Net Control Station for what is today known as the "OPS Nets" in the early days of AO-13. "K.O." worked as an engin- eer for Delco Electronics in Kokomo. AMSAT-NA Headquarters wishes to express its condolences to "K.O's" family and friends and will remember him as a patient "ELMER" to many beginners trying to make their first contacts on the OSCARS. [The AMSAT News Service (ANS) would like to thank Martha Saragovitz of AMSAT-NA Heaquarters for this bulletin item.] /EX SB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-148.03 DOVE STATUS HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 148.03 FROM AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD MAY 28, 1994 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT BID: $ANS-148.03 DOVE-OSCAR-17 (DO-17) Status Report On 25-MAY-94 at 05:25 UTC the DOVE Ground Command Team started loading and executing test software designed to assure the operation of the voice module after several months of dormancy. A brief test of the voice cap- ability generated only garbled voice, so it was turned off. The Team is now investigating possible causes, and at this point believe it is a soft- ware problem, not hardware. For the next few days DOVE may be in various modes as the Team continues testing and/or loading new software. The S-band transmitter will remain off. Telemetry reports are not needed at this time. [The AMSAT News Service (ANS) would like to thank Jim White (WD0E) for submitting this bulletin item. The software load was intentionally stopped when the second module was just loaded and turned on. The next step will be to continue with the satellite's deep tests. The satellite is sending telemetry on 437.125 MHz and its digipeater is turned on for now. To All Overseas Stations: If you have captured any LUSAT-1 telemetry you are requested to send the "raw" telemetry to the satellite control station and you will receive a certificate for your efforts. These tele-metry reports can be sent either via packet radio to: LU8DYF@LU8DYF.BA.ARG.SOAM and LU8DYF@ANY-ACTIVE-SATELLITE, or via Internet to: lu8dyf@asarin.org.ar If you intend to use the satellite, please remember that the BBS software is NOT LOADED and it will NOT be operational for the next 3 weeks, approx- imately. We wish to thanks LU8DYF and all the other stations that helped in the LUSAT-1 recovery: LU1DBC, LU1EXC, LU1FYZ, LU2BDT, LU2FHE, LU3AGY, LU4AGC, LU4FIO, LU6DYD, LU7ABF, LU7AKC, LU7DSU, LU7XAC, LU8ENU and LW1EEO. 73's de Eduardo Sweet, LU7AKC (LUSAT-1 recovery team) packet: lu7akc@lu7akc.#col.cf.arg.soam e-mail: lu7akc@asarin.org.ar /EX SB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-148.05 WEEKLY OSCAR STATUS REPORTS HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 148.05 FROM AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD MAY 28, 1994 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT BID: $ANS-148.05 Weekly OSCAR Status Reports: 28-MAY-94 AO-13: Current Transponder Operating Schedule: L QST *** AO-13 TRANSPONDER SCHEDULE *** 1994 May 07-Jul 11 Mode-B : MA 0 to MA 170 | Mode-BS : MA 170 to MA 218 | Mode-S : MA 218 to MA 220 |<- S beacon only Mode-S : MA 220 to MA 230 |<- S transponder; B trsp. is OFF Mode-BS : MA 230 to MA 250 | Alon/Alat 230/-5 Mode-B : MA 250 to MA 256 | Omnis : MA 250 to MA 120 | Move to attitude 180/0, Jul 11 [G3RUH/DB2OS/VK5AGR] FO-20: The analog mode will be continued indefinitely. [Kazu Sakamoto (JJ1WTK) qga02014@niftyserve.or.jp] ` KO-25: Please note that the KO-25 uplink was switched back to 145.980 MHz. The downlink is 436.500 MHz. [K6OYY] AO-16: AO-16 is chugging along, the only 1200 baud BBS bird running. [WH6I] LO-19: LO-19 is undergoing re-uploading of software. The ground controllers state that it will not be available for general use for about a month. [WH6I] IO-26: IO-26 is also in the software uploading process. Apparently both birds, i.e., LO-19 & IO-26, suffered SEUs at about the same time. [WH6I] MIR: MIR'S BBS is up and running. It seems that whatever electrical power problems they were experiencing aboard MIR have now been sorted out. ZR5JRS has worked the MIR BBS on a number of occassions over the last week with only a few problems. The only problem he has experienced is with users down-range that do not send the disconnect command before MIR goes LOS at their QTH. If a several users forget to send the disconnect, ZR5JRS find that nobody can not get in since the BBS has not yet given a time out. Please don't forget to send a disconnect command before MIR goes "over-the- horizon" at your QTH. [ZR5JRS @ ZS0HFS.NTL.ZAF.AF] RS-10\11: This satellite, as usual, is working extremely well and ZR5JRS has made many contacts throughout Southern Africa with good 599 signals. ZR5JRS notes that it is very pleasant to see a small but revived interest in RS-10 in South Africa. He hopes that it will last. [ZR5JRS @ ZS0HFS.NTL.ZAF.AF] KO-23: Some new earth images are now showing up on KO-23's BBS. WH6I notes that so far none of the images he has looked are very spectacular. [WH6I] The AMSAT NEWS Service (ANS) is looking for volunteers to contribute weekly OSCAR status reports. If you have a favorite OSCAR which you work on a regular basis and would like to contribute to this bulletin, please send your observations to WD0HHU at his CompuServe address of 70524,2272, on INTERNET at wd0hhu@amsat.org, or to his local packet BBS in the Denver, CO area, WD0HHU @ W0LJF.#NECO.CO.USA.NOAM. Also, if you find that the current set of orbital elements are not generating the correct AOS/LOS times at your QTH, PLEASE INCLUDE THAT INFORMATION AS WELL. The information you provide will be of value to all OSCAR enthusiasts. /EX
