Can anyone tell me the policies regarding censorship on the net by the
big providers, i.e., TymeNet, Sprintnet, et all?

The reason why I ask is that in searching for this newsgroup, I noticed
that none of the info I remember previously was being forwarded. In the
past, there were often 300+ postings a day with my other provider. With
the new provider in Tokyo, I've only received maybe 200 messages a week,
none, absolutely none of them having to do with what this newgroup is
famous for.

Needless to say, this is highly, highly disconcerting to me and it completely
brings into focus CENSORSHIP; perhaps it's done before entering Japan,
perhaps there actually is someone *deleting* messages found offensive
or considered dangerous to the gov't -- if my suspicions are correct, then
let you all be forewarned.

If you were in this situation, what would you do? As it is, I hope this
message gets out, and I hope any replies are able to be read in this
forum by yours truly.

Hope to hear from some of you.

>Try putting a nickel in first for groundcheck, then do ya'r thang...

Little piece of info for BradC3023 - this is a little piece of security that
the telco puts on their phones. They run a low-voltage current through the
coin to see if there *is* a coin in the slot. If there is, it lets you have
your peace. If there isn't, then you're either disconnected or routed to a
pissed-off operator.

My question: Would a slug work if you're just trying to pass the conductivity
test? I imagine if the security is tight enough and it measures the actual
resistance of the current, the slug would have to be the same size as the coin
in question, possibly the same metal. I doubt that they do this, though. I
don't see why a slug wouldn't work. Of course, I've never tried it, so...

Also, here's some tips for Brad (taken from various posts):

Be sure to cut down on the fuzz from the recording. The best way to do this
is to splice the recorder wires going to the mike into a mono plug. Plug it
into your sound card port and play it. Now, splice the wires back to the
mike. This should almost completely get rid of extraneous noise.

Another thing: make sure the volume isn't too loud. If you've ever listened
to the phone when you're putting coins in, you'll notice that the volume isn't
that high. Try to reproduce the exact volume. This way, it might fool human
operators as well as the computers.

And yet another question (sorry, I know I'm using a lot of bandwidth, but
better it be devoted to this than to porn and chain letters). When I was at a
local payphone I used my change in it and heard the quarter tone. It was a
local call. From what the beta .011 FAQ said (I believe, but don't quote me
on this), ACTS should not have been involved, as it supposedly was used only
in long-distance calls. the beta .012 FAQ doesn't mention ACTS in connection
with long distance calls. Is ACTS used commonly for local calls now?

Also, I, like you, am not an English teacher, but I do not possess a 145 I.Q.,

Furthermore, since I.Q. tests have been proven to be culturally biased, they

Hacker

(written a few weeks after Mitnick's arrest in Raleigh, NC...)

I'm probably just an ordinary person,
insignificant in the scheme of things,
if you get what I mean... Time to dump this scene.
I've been from Boston to Houston to San Diego,
then around the world from Singapore to Japan,
And back home again... All without leaving the country.

I may have call-forwarded four times to get
cops right off my ass with my cellular modem.
I definitely don't like it when the heat's too close,
just monitoring all my calls for carrier.
But I dig this game of cat-and-mouse all the same.
To me it's just another game of one-upmanship.

For I am a hacker on the Internet, joining IRC,
stopping to leave a flame in Alt.2600,
FTP'ing into MILNET for some utility,
searching for that Gopher site for info,
Web browsing on some Web site on data encryption.
Man! Call it what you want, it ain't any addiction.

Don't treat me like a common criminal!
I'm relatively harmless to anyone,
just watch out how you treat me.
I'm just too damned smart to remain satisfied
without understanding technical manuals.
So please don't start with this 'dangerous' shit!
I'm just an ordinary person who wants to know...

I'm probably some ordinary guy on the bus,
going to some hacker meet in the city.
You don't know who I am, but try to understand:
I don't try to crash your bank computer,
I don't steal corporate secrets for my own gain.
All I like is information out of curiosity.

Hackerz:

I am a NetRunner working out of Orange County in Los Angeles, and
during a data acquisition run here a few weeks back I discovered this
international phone number that the corps have been apparently passing
around and not sharing with anyone else.
Anyway, if you call the number, you will get an account with this
organization and start making money right away, which you can later
transfer or have issued to your home address in check form, in multiples
of $1000.
Call 011-24-831-3131, enter a 1 after the first and second tones,
and when asked for the six digit code enter 285300. Then listen and take
notes! I have been using this thing for several weeks now, and my money
has been coming in steadily, amounting to about three grand. I also
understand that it is completely legal according to international
financial regulations, but those change all the time so there is no
telling how long this will last.
So anyway, the call and the info are free, so call if you want a
few thousand extra bucks, or not if you don't have what it takes.
This has been a public service announcement.

: == The BASE of the headphone jack

: Testing and calibration
: -----------------------

: Now, here's how I tested it, I grabbed my portable phone and went outside to
: my residential box. Opened her up, and connected. But you can test however you
: want. Now, put on the headphones, and you SHOULD NOT hear a dial tone. If you
: do, you either: (a) Have a bad resister (b) Have a loose connection to the
: resister, or (c) Have to low of a resister. If (c), head back to RS and grab
: a higher value. OK, turn on your portable, (or whatever) and you should hear
: a dialtone in the headphones. If not, flip the switch. If you hear a dialtone,
: you 're in business. If not, you have either a loose connection or bad
: headphones. You decide. Now your box is ready for use.

: Usage and the optional part
: ---------------------------

: Well, it's not too hard to figure out how to use, but here is a synopsis. Flip
: the switch to the "off" position, clip on, making sure your connections are
: straight (Ring and tip), and listen! Not too hard... anyway, I suggest you
: tape your headphone connector to your walkman, plug in your headphones, and
: you're ready to plug in. I suggest residential boxes because you can close
: them partway and you automatically know who you're listening to. Also, if you
: are going to do some serious phreaking with this, I suggest you extend the
: wire, and put the resister and the switch in a box to protect them from
: damage.

: Some stuff I've heard and respected...

: "Have phun and don't get caught!"
: "Don't let phreaking die!"

Subject: Interesting System...(holy shit!)
Lines: 29

Holy shit! I think I just scheduled a satelite launch (or something)! I was
screwing around with this system I found, trying different commands, and I
got into some function called "Launch Authorization" It prompted me for some
info, and an authorization code (which I found through some more exploration)
and then I got a message "Launch Authorization Confirmed"!!! Holy shit! I
wonder what I did?!?! Now the status display shows my information with a
status of "LAUNCH_PENDING"...yikes. I don't know how to cancel it. If
anyone can figure out a way, please do!

Commands I've found so far:

a(uth) - Launch Authrization
l(ist) - status listing
p(rint) - print a specific entry from the status listing (accepts p/e=#)
o(utput) - prints info to a printer (who knows where -probably a bad idea)
m(essage) - send a message

I'm sure there are others.
