************************************************************************ DDN MGT Bulletin 94 DISA DDN Defense Communications System 16 MARCH 1992 Published by: DDN Network Info Center (NIC@NIC.DDN.MIL) (800) 365-3642 DEFENSE DATA NETWORK MANAGEMENT BULLETIN The DDN MANAGEMENT BULLETIN is distributed online by the DDN Network Information Center under DISA contract as a means of communicating official policy, procedures and other information of concern to management personnel at DDN facilities. Back issues may be read through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.112.36.5] using login="anonymous" and password="guest". The pathname for bulletins is ddn-news/ddn-mgt-bulletin-nn.txt (where "nn" is the bulletin number). ************************************************************************ MILNET/NIC RE-REGISTRATION SCHEDULE AND TAC CARD EXPIRATION Due to the restructuring of the reregistration schedule, some users may have TAC cards whose expiration date has passed. If you have such a card, please be advised that these cards will remain valid until your host is reregistered. The reregistration schedule is now being finalized, and all authorized host/gateway administrators will be notified of the month in which their hosts are to be reregistered. At this time, the templates for their current users will be made available for any deletions/modifications. In addition, they will be asked to provide registration data for any new users (additions to the database) on the standard template. The DDN NIC has recently initiated a software change that will allow the WHOIS database to specifically identify the users on a particular host that has moved behind a gateway. In the past, users associated with a host that moved behind a gateway appeared to be associated with the gateway rather than their specific host when queried in WHOIS. This recent software enhancement now allows you to use WHOIS to do the following: 1) display all pertinent information regarding a particular gateway 2) see a list of all the hosts behind the gateway and 3) view all the registered users associated with these hosts. These users will now be registered against the host on which they have their primary login account. The DDN NIC will initiate a final effort to increase the efficiency of the TAC Card process within several weeks. This will consist of a comprehensive review of the NIC database to ensure that all mailing addresses to which TAC Cards are sent are as complete and accurate as possible. Special attention will be given to OCONUS sites, since these locations have been especially difficult to send mail to. With the help of all authorizing host/ gateway administrators, this project will further streamline the TAC Card distribution process and will ensure that cards reach their final destination as quickly and efficiently as possible.
