This is a supplement/correction to my commentary (03more.txt) agreeing with Captain Video's comments in the 03info.arc download file. I agreed that if one were to use a TMS 7742 with the old (018) U7 code plus a 03 KEY SLAM/CHECKSUM patch, then all of the U30 software that we know and love would continue to work. This is generally true, except that I forgot to mention the caveat that this fix would not be able to get commercial services that use service IDs which the new 7* U24 might not process (eg Wizard Keys for Guest Request). In other words, the old U30 software with 03 keys in the 7742 would continue to work on all services that are capable of being subscribed to by a consumer on a stock 03 box. Be very skeptical of anyone who advertises that their new 03 fix will work on commercial services that are not legitimately available to the consumer, since, as far as I can tell, these fixes still utilize the new 7* U24. Since this device is blocked from picking data from certain areas of the video, then, **nobody's** 03 fix is going to get services outside of the ones that are normally consumer subscribable without replacing U24. So much for any advantage to the Wizard approach with this new system! This is just another compelling reason to build a 4* U24 emulator board. This should be worth a fortune to someone with the expertise to do so. Since the 4* U24 device is the part used in the commercial decoder, this should tell you something about its ability to get commercial services!
