Welcome to The Week in Warez Newsletter issue #5. This issue has been a major pain in the ass, but I made it. For many reasons I had to make the issue, primarily because Cypress seems to have gone to sleep and just given me the OK, and Mercury- cut hi s head on something (not a rumor, from HIS message to me) and had to go to a hospital to get stitches.
Well, I hope this issue turns out decent.It has some great parts in it, like Bishop's 2 week warez report and BiSH0P of HTC's interview with the VND Vice Prez. Hope you enjoy my work. It _DID_ take a long time. So, wish Merc a fast recovery, and read

Windows 95 releases marathon just started. What we saw? Shitload of store stuff for windows 95, shitload of fakes/dupes and lame releases from lame groups who just tried to reach elite level and get a piece of cake too! mostly all best util groups sho wn their activity on this week. We saw few Windows 95 releases and few final Plus! packs..of coz 90% of them were not working or old. Couriers tried to beat each other on big boards and that was a big stimulation coz all long-awaited stuff is released now ! Now i will tell you more detailed report about best groups:
DOD (Drink Or Die) - totally rocking the scene this week! no need to tell all DOD releases happened-you saw all of them flying on boards and internet. Just wanna mention major titles like: Backup Exec 7.01 Enterprise, Visio 4.0 for Windows (leader amo ng flow chart proggies), long awaited Sidekick 95 (c) Starfish, Mosaic in a Box, HotMetal Pro and many Microsoft titles like: MS Bob 1.05a for Win95, MS Excel/Word 7.0, Autoroute Express 4.0, finally Windows 95 OEM floppy - the version that installes! Rel eases from DOD came to scene everyday so this week was one of the best in their career ever! Especially that week finished for them with awesome and biggest thing ever released on scene - Corel Draw 6.0 and very expensive and cool multimedia presentation - Astound 2.02! Hope all software firms will be not too pissed to DOD coz of such releases assault. Totally Drink or Die present on boards more than 450 megs of releases on past week! hope this meggage will let you think a bit. good luck to scene kings a nd me. :)

PWA (Pirates with attitude) - pretty good week for this dudes too! As we know this SCUM merge happened and SCUM dudes already started releasing for new label They presented Windows 95 5.25 Shrink-wrapped copy. As all dudes before - PWA followed the tra dition and made bugs in packaging, but DOD fixed their fault and released fix on 4 disks soon - so, creds for this release are full! We all heard this shit on CNN about PWA, but dudes are not scared and released Microsoft Access newer candidate. Prolly co z their Swedish supplier is far away from USA feds :). During the week they also released IBM Antivirus 2.3 for OS/2 that is a cool release itself, Netvis 2.0a (cool network flowchart), new Phoenix BIOS upgrade, SMART for OS/2 warp (had no time to look on it yet), huge Print Ensemble ][ on 18 disks, High C/C++ thing, Official Air Guide, Microsoft Imager and finally Softram 95 (who the hell will use it? but anyways it is commercial). On the whole - week was very stable and active for them! Good points go to scene dinosaurus!

PINNACLE (PNC) - this new posse was not that active as they could be, but anyway appeared with few titles like Real World POS for DOS (what the hell is that? anybody knows? :), Multimedia CD-player on 1 disk and cool Microsoft titles - Works 4.0 Final Sales. That's not the best result that they could show but we saw activity and all releases were ok, no fuckups and regularly! still good points.

NTA (Nokturnal Trading Alliance) - Old 'traders' worked in same stream as weeks before. We saw releases - but that's not the job that they can really show! Just a shitload of Hard Disk utilities that gave many free credits to couriers. Work better, Mik ey! or supply releases to DOD :)

X-FORCE - that's the first week for this Europeans when i write special note about them! Hope they will last for long here.. we all want more quality releases and not just a stupid bullshitters! Why i added this young team to report? coz of one cool re lease on last week - Lotus NotesSuite 1.1 for OS/2 on 34 disk! Way to go dudes.. just stop releasing stupid IBM freeware shit and come back to real action! We all like your trading abilities - time to show your releasing force again!

dupers on this week of coz are VENDETTA and PROPHECY! I will not name all VENDETTA dupes.. they are like 50-60% of all their releases and main dupe of coz is LAME 40 disks Windows 95 CD Upgrade. Who the hell will need it after fully working 17-20 disks o
nes? :) Prophecy did 2 dupes too: first of all Softram 95 - day after PWA and next one is HUGE Corel Draw 6.0 dupe of DOD! Dudes.. only one thing that i can advise you - call big boards more often and check stuff. Now you look very lame. Thats all folks!

In Vendetta's defence, the Windows '95 40 Disk Release was *NOT* a dupe... This release was ~10 meg bigger than the DOD release, and was formatted on 1.45 meg size zip's so it can be put on floppy disks, it did not have missing files like the DOD R
elease and has been installed and tested on millions of machines worldwide... This is the Complete CD that you would buy in the stores (Upgrade CD)... I don't mean to dis DOD here, but I am trying to get in some equal repersentation for Vendetta.

Week in Warez #5! Here we are with another warez report. I'm sorry i missed last week's warez report. I'm a busy man these days. To make it up, I have included this week and last week's releases!! Anyhow, this week we find a SHITLOAD of new Windows 95 apps! Expect the following weeks to look similar to this week! Although the major Windows 95 Apps have been released, we should still see lots more Win95 products. DOD had a hell of a week this week. They released a lot of MAJOR Windows 95 products, such as MS Excel for Win95, MS Word for Win95, MS Access for Win95, MS Bob for Win95, Visio 4.0 for Win95, etc.. Although PWA already released the Full version of MS Office for Win95, it is still good to have each program in StandAlone form! This past week we see a couple more Win95 releases. We find a DOD disk release of Win95 in Microsoft's new 1.7 meg disk format. Later we see PWA's Win95 disk shrink version to fit on 1.44 and 1.2 disk formats. Although the release was missing some major parts, DOD release d a fix that will fix its problems.
Welps, I feel sorry for OS/2 users. The whole market shifted to Windows 95 .. and Bill Gates just got billions of dollars richer overnight
This is an article for a new column on a non glamorous but popular form of ware: old shit. Oldwarez are generally anything older than 6 months, but some really elite motherfuckers (heheh) consider it anything older than 0-1 dayz. Some people won't ev
en look at shit that's older than a week, but I think you should consider mellowing out your attitude on it. There's a lot of fun games and useful shit out there older than a week. I could name a few classics, like Stunts and The Simpsons, but I'm sure
you have plenty of old warez in your collection, even if you won't admit it. Man cannot survive on 0-3dayz alone, at least some people can't. Some of us too have old second computers (I have a 386sx-25 for a second computer) and it won't run the newest sh
it very well. So hey, if U can't have a balanced attitude toward warez, and think anyone that trades or runs stuff older than a few days is a lamer, well............ skip to the next part of this newsletter. :-)
Otherwise, pat yourself on the back for being tolerant and be glad that you can enjoy both the newest shit, and some of the older classics. Trade the 0-1 day stuff, but keep and use the older, tested and working shit.
So where the fuck can you find old warez? Well, it's easy to find. On Usenet, alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc.old is carried by some servers. If yours doesn't carry it, you can probably find a public server that does, or you could hack onto AOL and get it
from there(actually, as much as AOL sucks, it's the best place to leech stuff off of Usenet, because they keep their articles a long, long time). A lot of old warez is also posted to alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc. Another place to get old shit is on IRC. Ch
eck out #oldwarez for the best in old shit. There are some FTP sitez that have old shit too, but you'll have to find those yourself. If you're totally unsuccessful at finding old warez (heh), then just hold on to your 0-3 day stuff for about 6 months, a
nd you'll have some. OK, well this newsletter is called "Week in Warez" so I guess I have to say something about old warez trading for this week. alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc.old has been pretty fucking dead. I tried posting a few programs (TASM v1.01, Autoduel, and a few ot
hers) to try to get people to post, but so far it remains dead. Oh well. I have so much old shit sitting around that my shelf is about to break. If U want some, try #oldwarez on IRC. I may not be offering tho, since my main server right now is on a TIA
connection and DCC send doesn't work right (I'm going to have to change servers pretty soon, this sucks.) I hear so many people requesting shit that I have, it's not even funny. Right now I'm posting The Simpsons arcade game to a.b.w.i-p crossposted to
a.b.w.i-p.o. Get it while it's hot (oops, I guess that was a few years ago, heeheheh). #oldwarez has been live as hell on IRC, but the usual op wars are still happening, and some of the ops like to kick everyone off the channel and declare their godhood
. Well fuck them, there's always #oldwarez2 I suppose. Usually the wars don't last too long, so if you're genuinely interested in trading old warez, pleaz come to #oldwarez. Otherwise, if you're just a leecher and never offer, don't clutter the fucking
channel. Some people tolerate slow DCC's (I do, since I'm on a 14.4k connect myself) and some people don't. If you offer, be sure to specify if your DCC will be slow so people don't waste their time. Also, when you leech, make sure the person offering
tolerates slow DCC's if yours is slow, otherwise, you might find yourself cut off about 2.9 megs into a 3 meg file (ouch, FUCK).

Why are CD-RIP programs released over and over again? Sometimes they are packaged poorly, sometimes they are missing files, sometimes they are too big and sometimes they don't work properly. What's so difficult? What are these mistakes repeated? All
you have to do is ARJ *.* -v 1440 to compress the CD into 1.44 megabyte volumes. Then you simply add your NFO files and FILE_ID.DIZ then zip each volume using PKZIP. That may seem fool-proof, but there are a lot more complexities behind this. For exam
ple, the Mechwarrior 2 CD release by OTFW required 2 install fixes and 2 hacked EXE files to get it working properly. The TDU release worked perfectly fine. Where's the gap? TDU made a loader and properly packaged the game, while OTFW was missing a cru
cial hidden file and included a CD emulator that simply did not work with the game. Making loaders and fully testing the CD releases is a great idea. You just can't lose when your release is ready to use after unzipping. Some attempts at installation p
rograms or batch files worked, but unless the job is done properly, you will end up with a mess of files on your hand. If PKZIP was as flexible as ARJ and could create multiple volumes in the same manner, that would eliminate the need for archives inside
s archives. Some ZIP chunker programs have come close, but ARJ remains as the standard for ripping CD's. Learn from past mistakes. Make sure you do not miss any files when creating your ARJ files. Create a simple batch or script that installs the prog
ram and/or runs it. Make sure the CD emulators work properly with the program all the way through. Don't release a CD rip (or full) too big. It is very bothersome to deal with large releases. If you plan on releasing something big, do it in parts. For
example, release an animation pack or Sound/Speech patch separate from the main CD rip. This way, users with limited space can still use the programs. You must keep in mind that the installation process takes up a lot more space than the final product.
The ZIP files, the ARJ files and the installation files must all be there. In the end, fully testing and double checking everything pays off. No more re-releases due to poor packaging, and no more faulty releases. Do your homework, test the files, an
d keep the end user in mind.

(Krypton) We started out with Tsunami calling me up, mad with the way that FSW was going, so we decided to start a new an improved group.... with a couple of the cool localers (Lone Dragon and Brutus).
(BiSh0P-) Was FSW separated in 2 groups, Vendetta and Rape ?
(Krypton) Rape was a part of FSW but died young due to a lack of organization. Vendetta was more prepare so we are still in action :).
(BiSh0P-) Was Tsunami the only leader with experience or the other has well ?
(Krypton) No, Tsunami was the one with the MOST experience. Brutus and I were already involved in a local group that merged into the former FSW (sounds like FORMER USSR (BiSh0P-) So VND like the former FSW (Fucking Sweet Warez) And most members are coming from it ?
(Krypton) Some members are coming from it. FSW had a bunch of lamers towards the end, and it just wasn't gonna work. Too many Enemies and it was crumbling. VND is the refreshed FSW. More organized, and we've been more selective.
(BiSh0P-) I notice that you guys release a lot (ie 3-4/week) but why is VND having a bad rep among the scene ?
(Krypton) You know I'm not sure. VND has released some damn good releases. We usually test our releases, I understand we need to work on that aspect (G), but VND has been doing MUCH better than many other groups (No need to mention them). I think it mi
ght be that guilt that people had against FSW, but I'm not sure. I'm proud of the success that VND has had, and I trust that we will grow. We have made mistakes, I admit, and we are working to correct our ways.
(BiSh0P-) Is Vendetta a games or an applications releasing groups ?
(Krypton) VenDetta is both a game and application release group. Why must we concentrate on just one? I don't believe a group must concentrate on just one aspect and dominate it. If we do a good job doing both, then we'll get famous for both, right?
(BiSh0P-) Talking about your release now.. I have seen many release by VND in the past weeks. And i personnaly used some like the ASM Tutorial and other games you release..
(Krypton) Yes. We are in the progress of doing a big release too. I say in the progress of because it is so huge that we didn't want to release it in one day. It's called Pool Champion, very nice game, our vendetta.exe installation program especially h
elped for this. Anyways in the process of ripping the game, we figured that if we could release two scenarios WITH the game and then the last three apart from the game, we could save people disk space and still let them enjoy the entire game, so if with o
ne scenario, you can just download another one, delete the old one, and continue along. I recognize the good work of our coders/rippers on this release.
(BiSh0P-) So i notice that some ppl are playing with Vendetta like takeover vnd's channel and etc. Do you think that tell us more about the way ppl think about vnd or was that from the old fsw heritage ?!
(Krypton) Well check our kisses/disses section in our NFO/EXE. But ultimately I think it was an immature act on the part of the people involved. I think both they know that and the rest of the scene knows it. Apparently some people weren't willing to l
et go of that. The ones that messed with #vendetta also messed with #fsw. It's all the same. Doesn't matter, though.
(BiSh0P-) Anyways now that you are in WWN 5 what do you think of the mag and the support of the scene to the other groups in general ?
(Krypton) It's nice to see someone reporting on the happenings in the scene. I like reading e-mags about ANSI groups, and it's good to see them imported into the warez scene. It shows people care.
