Scotty, the Handyscanner ------------------------ Scotty is a black & white hand-held scanner which allows you to scan pictures with up to 400 dpi or 64 grey shades. It is connected to your Amiga at the parallel port. A demo version of the scan software "ScanQuix" is enclosed on this CD together with some sample pictures. You can start ScanQuix by just double clicking the icon. » If you are working with Workbench 2.0, you will get german texts. » To change this, copy the drawer "Scotty" to your harddisk and » delete the subdirectory "Scotty/Catalogs". Scotty is available from: RBM Computertechnik Bernd Rudolf Kleinenberger Weg 2a D-33100 Paderborn (Germany) Tel.: +49 5251 640646 Fax: +49 5251 640655 Testing ======= To use ScanQuix without scanner, some pictures are enclosed in the subdirectory "Pictures/Rohdaten". They are in a raw format containing exactly the data as read from the scanner. Their filenames end with ".raw". You can load such a picture with the menu item "Project » Open...". Software ======== The ScanQuix software provides basic scanning and image conversion functions. For further image processing, you can use your favorite paint program. Scanning ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Menu item "Read » Start Scan..." First you can select the size of the area you want to scan. The resolution must be set at the scanner itself. You start the scan by pressing and holding the "START" key on the scanner. Then pull the scanner slowly over the picture. When the red LED flashes, you are moving the scanner too fast; when it goes out, you moved too fast and data is lost. Picture Settings ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Size ~~~~ Menu item "Edit » Picture Size..." You can either select a size relative to the scanned picture or a fixed size (in pixels). When the checkbox "keep aspect ratio" is activated, the with is adjusted when you change the height and vice versa. This may be useful to adjust the picture to a HIRES screen: - deselect the checkbox - adjust the width or height - select the checkbox Now, you can change the size of the picture without destroying the aspect ratio. Greyscale ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Menu item: "Edit » Greyscale" To convert the black and white raster images produced by the scanner into shades of grey, the following process is performed: For each pixel of the image a square area of several pixels (a "cell") is taken from the scanned picture. The number of black pixels in a cell corresponds to the grey shade. So, with a cell size of 4, you can get 17 different grey shades. In the window "Greyscale", you can adjust the size of the cells. The larger the cells the smaller is the produced image, because the cells do not overlap. When choosing a picture size of more than 100%, the cells do overlap resulting in a larger but more blurred picture. With the slider "Number of shades used:" you can choose how many of the available greyshades should be used. The maximum number of shades depends on the number of grey shades in the palette of the screen. If an own screen is used, the palette is filled with as much greyshades as possible. With the AGA-chipset you can display the full 64 shades. Load/Save ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ With "Project » Save As » Displayed Picture...", you can save the shown image to disk. The colors which are not used by the image are marked with green. The menu item "Project » Save As » Raw Data..." is for saving the picture as it was produced by the scanner. So you can reload it with "Project » Open..." and process it again. Settings ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ With "Settings » Save", all settings are saved to disk and are used when you start ScanQuix the next time. Palette ~~~~~~~ You can open an own color palette (a palette from an IFF-picture file) with "Settings » Palette » Open Custom Palette...". You can switch between your own palette and the standard palette via the menu item "Settings » Palette » Use Custom Palette ?". With this feature, it is very simple to insert scanned items into existing pictures. This function is only available when ScanQuix is running on an own screen. Scan Screen ~~~~~~~~~~~ If you are working with an Amiga that have only "Chip RAM" and use a high resolution screen with many colors, there may be some errors in the scanned images. To avoid this, select the menu item "Settings » Scan Screen ?". Now, a low resolution screen is opened while scanning. Normally, this feature is not needed.
