From: Andrew.Cohill@vtssi.vt.edu (Andrew Michael Cohill) Subject: ORGS: Professional organizations and HCI Date: 29 Jan 93 14:39:33 GMT Organization: Fire in the Mountain Crossposted from comp.human-factors There are two places to start when investigating organizations that are involved with HCI: The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society P.O. Box 1369 Santa Monica, CA 90406-1369 USA 310/394-1811 fax 310/394-2410 There are about 20 technical groups in the HFES with a wide range of special interests, but the largest one is the CSTG (Computer Systems Technical Group), with about 1100 members, or about 20% of the society (only about half the society's members also subscribe to the technical groups). Virtually all of the people in the CSTG are involved with HCI. The CSTG also has a listserv group, CSTG-L, publishes the CSTG 'Bulletin' three times a year, and sponsors numerous paper sessions at the annual HFES conference. The HFES is now publishing 'Ergonomics in Design', a magazine aimed especially at practitioners, and of course there will be articles on HCI in practice in practically every issue. HFES membership also includes the HFES journal, for more scholarly work, and the HFES Bulletin, a monthly newsletter of the Society. Dues are $70.00 US/year. Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) 1515 Broadway New York,NY 10036-5701 USA 212/869-7440 fax 212/869-0481 The ACM has SIGs instead of TGs. SIGCHI (Computer Human Interaction) has several thousand members and hosts the largest yearly conference on HCI in the world. This year's conference is called InterCHI and will be held in Amsterdam, in conjunction with the European HCI conference Interact. Normally the CHI conferences are held in the US. In addition to 'Communications of the ACM', if you pay the additonal dues for SIGCHI, you get the SIGCHI Bulletin several times a year, with lots of articles and information about HCI work, both academic and practitioner oriented. Dues for both are about $100.00 US/year.
