From: "PSOTKA, JOSEPH" Subject: SCI: 2-D vs 3-D Immersion? Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1993 08:36:47 CST Is there a good reference that examines the quality of immersion for binocular displays that are 2D vs 3D? Why all the effort to double the compuatations and display required for 3D displays when 15% of us do not have stereoscopic vision anyway?? Its wasted on 20% of the population. Given the tradeoff between pixelcounts and stereo, I would think that double the pixels would be much more worthwhile than stereo, especially at the cost of doubling the display and processoprs. Note: this still means that you have a 3-D model for the image, but the mind now processes stereo from movement and interaction (which it does very well under a process known as kinetic depth effects) rather than from binocular fusion.
