Subject: TECH: 3DO unveils innovative 'Multiplayer'

Clarinet, the online newservice available via many USENET hosts,
reports that 3DO, the new startup headed by Electronic Arts CEO Trip
Hawkins, is showing its advanced video-game player, capable of "3D"
effects, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

According to Clarinet, "The device, to hit retail stores in the fall
at a price of about $700, will play game and educational software,
audio compact discs and photo compact discs. Future attachments will
enable it to show movies, edit videotape, play musical instruments and
receive cable-television signals.  A packed news conference to
announce the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer drew a crowd of about 500,
partly because of the heavy-weight backing that the fledgling company
has generated for the product launch.  The company's investor partners
include Matsushita Electric and its MCA subsidiary, as well as AT&T,
Time Warner Inc. and software-producer Electronic Arts.

One of the first products will be a Jurassic Park game.  Steven
Spielberg is involved in the 3DO project and a Hawkins-supporter.
