From: John Styles Subject: PHIL: Are virtual worlds real Date: Fri, 12 Feb 93 22:04 GMT There is, here in Britain, a lobbying organisation called CAMRA - the campaign for real ale. Its purpose is to lobby major breweries, pub owners and the government to ensure that 'real ale' which is beer made by traditional methods is widely available. Once VR equipment becomes cheap and widely available, and people choose to live in their fantasy virtual worlds we will need a 'campaign for real reality' to encourage people to live in the 'real' world. Its activities will include bursaries (win a scholarship to the real world) and advertising campaigns ('get real, dudes'). On a similar subject, for characters like the one in the Star Trek holodeck who wanted to escape to the real world, I suggest the term 'metaphysically challanged'.
