Visualization Programmer for Meteorology and Oceanography
		   (Job number #92-11-18)

                     Job Description

Baskin Center for Boards of Studies in
Computer Engineering and Computer & Information Sciences
               Division of Natural Sciences
          University of California, Santa Cruz

The goal of the REINAS (Real-time Environmental Information Network
and Analysis System) project is to develop an architecture and system
to gather and integrate data from geographically dispersed sensors and
to control individual programmable sensors; to store, manage, and
provide secure distributed access to this data; and to facilitate
real-time operational use of this data by environmental scientists at
geographically distributed locations.

The system will provide support for real-time data acquisition,
visualization, and management of large environmental data sets. The
focus is on the design, development, and implementation of an
efficient architecture for data collection, management, processing and
visualization in real-time for applications in meteorology and
oceanography.

This person will lead in development of software for visualization of
environmental data being developed at UCSC in the REINAS project, and
will work closely with the environmental scientists for which REINAS
is being constructed.

The successful candidate will have a major role in facilitating
technology transfer between the computer systems development and the
scientific investigators to be supported by the REINAS system. This
will include close interactions and coordination with the systems
architects, data base and network designers, and instrumentation
engineers, as well as the environmental scientists and users. As a
professional software engineer, the person filling this position will
be expected to provide continuity for the visualization component over
the different phases of the REINAS project.

System Analysis and Design (50%)

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the incumbent will:
Work with Environmental Scientists at Naval Postgraduate School,
MBARI, NOAA to design the visualization component of the REINAS
project. Evaluate visualization platform for the REINAS project.
Lead the weekly Monterey Bay - Salinas Valley briefings regarding
REINAS.

Programming and Implementation (50%)

Design and implement data format and access protocols with the
database architect. Work with graduate researchers under direction of
PI.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

REQUIRED:

Background in computer graphics; mathematical background sufficient to
provide mastery of interpolation/approximation techniques; excellent
communication skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse
group of researchers; experience, training, and education equivalent
to a B.S. in computer science, meteorology, or oceanography;
programming experience in UNIX, C, SGI GL and X-Windows software
environment.

PREFERRED:

Experience, training, and education equivalent to an advanced degree;
proficiency in use of C++, familiarity with up-to-date OpenGL software
environment; experience with scientific visualization techniques (e.g.
volume rendering and flow visualization) and packages (e.g. Explorer,
apE, AVS, Khoros); experience with Geographic Information Systems
(GIS); experience with and knowledge of graphical user interfaces;
experience with and knowledge of parallel and distributed graphics
systems.

SPECIAL NOTE: All applications/resumes received from current UCSC
employees will be given priority consideration. In the event a
qualified individual is not hired from this pool, all other
applications/resumes received by the final filing date, which meet the
requirements of the position, will be forwarded to the hiring unit for
consideration.
