From: jew5001@venus.tamu.edu (WILLIAMSON, JOHN EDWARD) Subject: PUBS: Wired: a magazine review Date: 1 Feb 1993 20:50 CST Organization: Texas A&M University, Academic Computing Services I came across a new magazine that I feel the readers of sci.v-w might find of interest. Wired PO Box 191826 San Francisco, CA 94119-1826 (1-800-so-wired) $19.95 per year (6 issues) It is in the same vein as Mondo 2000, but less annoying. At 112 pages it is bigger and cheaper. Its greatest assest is that it didn't have a reference to Dirk and Sandy. Contents (partial list) War is Virtual Hell by Bruce Sterling A fairly comprehensive article on DARPA's SIMNET, its current use and its future. Screams of Conciousness by Steward Brand An interview with Camiller Paglia ("the bad girl of feminism"), in which Brand compares her to Marshall McLuhan. This is a Naked Lady The requisite article on simulated/VR sex. Every mag of this genre must cover this topic. Homebrew VR Covers PCVR and REND386. Various software and book reviews are interspersed along with several other articles on the history of libraries, phreaking, Inslaw and much much more. As we say in Texas, "Joe Bob says check it out." John Williamson [MODERATOR'S NOTE: Commercial postings are offered on sci.virtual-worlds as a public service.
