I think the only problem with your tracking system is that it's not
portable.  A laser grid would be fine (but expensive) but you couldn't
take it with you.

(here's one for you Nintendo freaks out there!)  I wonder if you could
use that mat that nintendo makes to do very rough foot tracking!
Worth a try.  What about some kind of floor that works like a hundred
track balls and has little servos to give you a little force feedback
so you don't fall on your ass.  Kinda like walking on hundreds of
marbles that won't let you fall down!  Worth an attempt.

OK.  more of the same.

Maybe we should discover a new way of movement in virtual worlds, thus
eliminating the need for costly trackers!
