Both Bell Labs and the Japanese have had working photonic computers
for some time now.  Bell labs is the size of a coffee table (or at
leats it was last year) And the Japanese one is somewhat smaller.
There are no plans that I know of to make a commercial optical
computer anytime in the near future.
