From: David_Douglas Subject: CONF: Spatially Oriented Referencing Systems Assn., Jul-Aug 92, Ottawa Date: Fri, 15 May 1992 10:00:28 EDT Crossposted from UIGIS-L mailing list (UIGIS-L@UVBM.BITNET) SORSA '92 GENERAL MEETING, SYMPOSIUM, AND WORKSHOP UNIVERSITY of OTTAWA, CANADA, JULY 27 - AUG 2, 1992 SPATIALLY ORIENTED REFERENCING SYSTEMS ASSOCIATION The SORSA Annual General Assembly will be held on August 2, 1992. It will be preceded by the SORSA Symposium and two special workshops, one to be offered by the Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing Sector (SMRSS) of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, and the other by the Operational Research and Analysis Establishment (ORAE) of the Canadian Department of National Defense (DND). The SORSA Symposium theme will be "Spatial Systems for the next Century". It will begin the evening July 31st and run through to the start of the General Assembly. This will, in turn, be preceded by the two Special Workshops being organized by SORSA for SMRSS and ORAE. The venue for the General Meeting and Symposium will be the Simard Building at the University of Ottawa, 165 Waller Street at Laurier Avenue. The Special Workshops may be held nearby at the sponsoring agency. These meetings precede the ISPRS and IGU Congresses in Washington, D.C. and the IGU Commission #8 on Spatial Data Handling meeting in Charleston, South Carolina. Flights to and from Washington (directly or via Syracuse, New York or Boston) should be booked early to ensure travel on August 2nd or 3rd. Some people are likely to be driving down from Ottawa and anyone travelling by car or wishing a ride should notify David Douglas, conference organizer, as soon as possible. Note that elapsed flying times vary between 2 and 4 hours and driving time is about 11 hours. WORKSHOP PROGRAM SURVEYING, MAPPING AND REMOTE SENSING SECTOR (SMRSS) ENERGY MINES AND RESOURCES CANADA (EMR) Tuesday, July 28th and Wednesday, July 29th are devoted to a review and assessment of three topics of particular interest to SMRSS of EMR. Themes: 1. Obtaining and handling data input to create clean databases for Geographical Information Systems; 2. Methods of representing Digital Elevation Models (DEMs); and, 3. Appropriate standards for the exchange of digital map data. Thursday, July 30th and Friday July 31st are devoted to topics of interest in National Defense. Themes: 1. Creating A Geopolitical Data Base 2. Tactical Spatial Decision Support Systems 3. Digital Elevation Models for Defense 4. Spatial Systems for Geostrategic Analysis Active participation in the SMRSS and ORAE workshops will be restricted, however all SORSA members are welcome to attend as observers at no additional registration charge. Sub-Themes considered in all workshops will include: 1. Creating Clean Digital Data Bases 2. Representing Digital Elevation Models 3. These sessions will extend the Special Workshop topics to address wider areas of the challenges and the emerging developments of spatial systems into the next century. WORKING GROUP SESSIONS: These sessions will focus on the efforts of SORSA working groups (past, present and future) with a particular aim of coordinating efforts with similar groups in the IUSM and IUSM member societies SORSA '92 will be a time for renewing or discontinuing existing working groups and for establishing new working groups or initiating participation in IUSM working groups. SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP SESSIONS: Topics for these sessions are established at the meeting itself on the basis of participant interest.
