From: thinman@netcom.com (Lance Norskog) Subject: TECH: SGI machines Date: Sun, 3 May 92 16:27:04 PDT My SGI friends report that the Indigo is a great 2D machine but not whizzy at 3D. It doesn't have the trademark SGI 3D hardware. You can find old MIPS workstations used that compile much more slowly than an Indigo, but do 3D graphics faster. SGI rewrote the X server from scratch and it performs very very well; the machine has nice video stuff in the pipeline and is generally aimed at multimedia apps instead of SGI's traditional 3D CAD markets. What we need is an Indigo with the Geometry Engine. Or a Personal Iris with the sound hardware. Lance Norskog
