From: Karin August <71033.702@CompuServe.COM> Subject: CULTURE: Virtual concert in NJ Date: 02 May 92 20:15:02 EDT V R A S P would like everyone interested in virtual reality and/or music to know that the Princeton University Dept of Music will be performing Part 2 of "Music for Computers, Performers & Hybrids" on Monday, May 4, 1992 in the Taplin Auditorium located in Fein Hall off Washington Street, Princeton, NJ. The university switchboard can be reached at (609) 258-3000 for directions. Admission is free. Instruments include the Zeta violin, the Mathews/Boie radio drum, an IRCAM Musical workstation, a Macintosh IIci, and a NeXT. (Although, perhaps the computers should be listed under performers!) Performers include David Jaffe, Mari Kimura, Colin Nancarrow, Christopher Penrose, Andrew Schloss, William Schottstaedt, and Linda Seltzer. I attended Part 1 on Friday, May 1 (not having any idea what to expect from a virtual concert) and was fascinated. Particularly by the fact that no stored or pre-recorded sequences are used in the interactive compositions, rather the computers interpret from physical and musical gesture how they should respond to the performers and in fact influence the nature of the music in a dynamic way Also, the performers in a duet can exert influence on each other by sending signals to the computers or instruments to change their pitch. The accompanying program is highly informative and even if you don't attend, but are still interested in learning more about it all, try contacting the music dept and requesting a spare program.
