From: TOBIAS@bonnie.physik.uni-stuttgart.de () Subject: Radiation Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1992 12:02:45 GMT Organization: University of Stuttgart, FRG Hi out there ! I've tried building up my own Display helmet. The problem for me in fact was: what kind of Display ?? I tried LCD but the resolution was quite bad. Then I bought a Sony Watchman. It seemed to be perfect. The picture is perfect and the devices are very small. But after playing a little bit with it I discovered a small label on it saying: "Attention, X-Ray-Radiation." Now my question: What can be done - or better is done (professional helmets ? ) - in order to protect the user from this kind of problems with non LCD Displays. One should keep in mind, that even low frequent electromagnetic radiation can be very dangerous if placed near the head. So the national health ministry of the FRG released a note that even some kind of non-cable telephones should only be used not near the head in order to protect from tumors. Perhaps you know the swedish (simple) test norm to meassure the radiation of computer monitors. Put a formatted Disk (5 1/4) one hour direktly before your screen. The amount of reading errors ranges normally to about 50. Now imagine having you head instead of the floppy disk before the screen Of course the probability of having a mutation is less. But still quite risky, isn`t it ? Bye. T.Haist.
