Is special purpose computing hardware the bottleneck? I've seen many custom designs torpedoed over the years, e.g. LISP machines, as general purpose equipment continue their relentless doubling in power every year or two. There may be some bottlenecks in good I/O devices, e.g. displays, position sensors and in software construction kits for formulating virtual worlds and their rendering. More opinions as to what is important to pursue?
