This is the first international conference to focus on the con-
vergence of the technical and policy aspects of multimedia com-
munications applications and their markets. The conference theme
is "Multimedia Communications: Forging the Links: Market, Tech-
nology, Policy".  The conference is intended to explore the grow-
ing emergence of multimedia applications and technology in
telecommunications and stand alone systems. It aims to provide a
forum for learning and discussion for researchers, system sup-
pliers, system users, and policy makers. The official languages
of the conference are English and French.  Simultaneous transla-
tion will be provided for the presentations.

                          THEME TRACKS

The conference will be organized around three broad theme tracks
linked by plenary sessions. Suggested topics are:

1.  Emerging multimedia markets, applications and services
    - emerging markets, applications, market segmentation,
        integration
    - application test beds, entertainment and the arts, educa-
        tion, training, and business,
    - evolution in the industry (hardware manufacturers, data
        base vendors, networks etc.)
    - impact of changes on the market and media, individuals and
        quality of life

2.  Technologies influencing recent advances in multimedia com-
        munications
    -networks and terminals
    -databases: architectures, features
    -applications: design, tools for creation, impact on work
    -standards and protocols
    -signal processing
    -coding, compression and error correction
    -human interfaces, their design and testing

3.  Policy, legal, regulatory and standards issues
    - networks: the role of the common carriers, broadcasters and
        cable companies; principles of access and allocation of
        costs; organization for start-up
    - standards: their role in development; relation to indus-
        trial and technology development policy
    - content: cultural policy, regulation of content;
        intellectual property: copyright and patents

                       AUTHOR INFORMATION

Theme Track Presentations:
    Must be original and unpublished; may be in either English or
French. Submit a 1,000-word abstract in four (4)copies and indi-
cate the theme. Please indicate audio-visual requirements.

Demonstrations:
    May be in English or French and should deal with leading edge
applications and systems relevant to emerging public and private
networks (telecommunications or broadcasting) as well as stand
alone systems (CD-ROM, CD-I and others). Demonstrations should be
aimed at educating and giving a view of future possibilities and
trends, and should not be directed at marketing a product. Submit
a 1,000-word abstract or a videotape of about 10 minutes. Indi-
cate whether the demonstration is short (facilities will be
available for demonstrations within the theme sessions; present-
ations should last no more than 30 minutes) or continuous (a
demonstration room will be open for two days during the con-
ference). Please indicate your technical requirements.  Please
