We are about one month away from opening the Unpublished Papers
Archive for sci.virtual-worlds. Sandy Moy and Ed Lightfoot,
Directors at the University of Washington Computers & Computing
Division, have kindly consented to up our memory to accommodate
between 10 and 15 papers of 15-30 pages each cycle, or about
90-100 papers each year. Thanks, Sandy and Ed.

Initially, papers will be in ASCII; later we will work out
Postscript and other formats.

We are arranging for indexing and archiving on a regular basis,
with papers remaining available for online access between 30 and
45 days. (We have to do some experimenting.) When the papers
roll over, we will keep a copy offline and permanently post the
names and email addresses of the authors for later reference.

YOU MUST HAVE USENET/INTERNET ACCESS TO FTP THESE PAPERS. WE WILL
*NOT* BE MAINTAINING A MAILING SERVICE. If you want to have access,
make your plans to gain USENET/INTERNET access NOW. However, you
will always be able to contact the authors and directly request a
copy.

The plan is to post an announcement of the available papers and
their authors for each cycle. You will be able to access these
papers via FTP, at the location noted, at your convenience.

Also, we will maintain a cumulative list of titles, with authors
and their addresses as a separate document that can be sent out.

The papers will be unreviewed, so you will have to be the judge of
their quality. We are working out a scheme by which your critical
comments will accompany the papers, also for access by FTP. In
this way you will know whose opinion is whose, an innovation not
currently offered by most academic journals.

Regarding the papers, we may also post "Letters" in the regular
message section of sci.virtual-worlds.

FOR NOW...

If you have a paper to submit, DO NOT SEND IT YET. Please send a
message to hlab@u.washington.edu with the header,

		SUBJECT: Paper Submission Request

We will use your requests to prioritize the actual archiving
of the papers. Please send a request ONLY if you have a paper to
submit, not if you are still working on one. We all know how a
paper project can stretch out; tell us only when you're really
ready.

Thanks, and we will be back to you shortly with the final details.
Your encouragement and patience with us while we work out the
mechanism has been welcome.

Also, we are seriously considering segmenting the newsgroup to give
more specific coverage to both "garage VR" and high-end R&D and
applications. If you have strong feelings about this, send us some
mail.
