I don't think you're confused.  Or at least if you are, you're in good
company.

"Menus" are inherently 2D, and VR is inherently 3D.

I believe objects in a VR should respond to messages; there's no need to
distinguish special "menu" or "icon" objects -- they're just plain old
objects whose action routines do specific things when you manipulate the
object itself.
