From: bcsaic!chrise@cs.washington.edu (Chris Esposito) Subject: TECH: goggle/tracker/tactile product reviews Date: 27 Feb 92 17:56:09 GMT Organization: Boeing Research & Technology We're looking at buying some additional hardware, but would like to get some reviews / opinions of these products before diving into the tar pit they call procurement around here. ( 0.1 smileys here) 1. New Goggles - the Cyberface 2 from LEEP Optics appears to have it all over the VPL HRX - wider field of view, comparable pixels/degree, greater apparent resolution 1481 H by 84 V (although I don't think I completely understand how they derive these "equivalent linear resolution" numbers), both RGB and NTSC input, and a SUBSTANTIALLY lower price ($8K vs $50K). Can anyone that has a pair of these comment on how they like them and how they stack up against the HRXs (or anything else available)? 2. A Big Bird (from Ascension Technologies) with at least 8 sensors. They claim to provide position tracking in a hemisphere with an 8 foot radius. It's still tethered, so it's not a long-term solution. 3. A tactile feedback setup from Xtensory - some tactors mounted on the fingertips, others mounted elsewhere on the arms. When you swim up a creek, and an eel bites your cheek, that's a moray! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chris Esposito (206) 865-3162 | Internet: chrise@atc.boeing.com Boeing Research & Technology, Comp.
