There was an article in 1991 SIGGRAPH Proceedings (Computer Graphics v 25, n 4, p 91) by Hart and DeFanti on "Efficient antialiased rendering of 3-D linear fractals" that discusses algorithms for rendering arbitrarily resolution fractals on limited resolution output.
