From: ab45@prism.gatech.edu (Anne M. Balsamo) Subject: CULTURE: Favorite Cyberpunk Fiction Date: Fri, 21 Feb 92 01:06:48 -0500 One of the few women writing cyberpunk is Pat Cadigan. Check out her two novels: *Mindplayers* and especially *Synners* A "synner" is a human video-music synthesizer, in this case, a cool, techno-hip black chick named Gina. Visual Mark (gina's beau) strokes out when connected to the "system" and unleashes a virus that shuts down the network. If you want to start with short stories, there are three anthologies that offer a selection from the major cyberpunk writers: Mirrorshades: The cyberpunk anthology, by Bruce Sterling Burning Chrome, by William Gibson Future on Fire, by Orson Scott Card Other titles and authors that are widely read and liked: Stand on Zanzibar, John Brunner Dhalgren, and Stars in My Pocket like Grains of Sand, Samual Delany The Silicon Man, Charles Platt Pacific Edge (part of a trilogy), Kim Stanley Robinson Software, and Wetware, Rudy Rucker Frontera, Lewis Shiner Thousand Light Years from Home, James Tiptree, Jr. The Ophiuchi Hotline, Titan, Wizard, Demon, by John Varley Other names of science fiction writers who either greatly influenced cyber- punk writers, or are writing about similar issues (but who may not be primarily identified as cyberpunk): Brian Aldiss, J.G. Ballard, Octavia Butler, Karel Capek, D.G. Compton, Philip K. Dick, Thomas Disch, K.W. Jeter, Ursula LeGuin, Stanislaw Lem, Rebecca Ore, Kim Stanley Robinson, Joanna Russ, John Shirley, Joan Slonczewski Gene Wolfe These suggestions come from a list I've compiled from science fiction reviews and interviews with writers and readers.
