From: William Charles Sabram Subject: TECH:L Help, please. Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1992 14:30:33 -0500 (EST) Hello, I posted here about 6 weeks ago when I was beginning my Senior Degrees Project in Industrial Design here at Carnegie Mellon Univ. I have a few questions to ask and a general observation. Ques: Does anyone know how close the tiny LCD screens in the eyepiece can sit before the eyes? I heard 5 cm, which seems an awfully big distance. Everyone who wears these things looks like Daffy Duck after dynamite went off in his face. Could someone tell me how soon very small, high res screens might sit right before the eyes? Sunglass type lenses would be nice, but how far in the future are we looking for this development? Ques: Exactly why are "EyePhones" so bulky? My professor said to me: "These Eyephones, I do not understand. If you want to hear excellent stereo sound, you do not need to wear the entire stereo system on your head!" Can the same thing be said for all the stuff neccessary to track the head and offer #D sight and sound? Understandably, I wish to slim down the head mounted device in my proposed design, but I am not having much luck finding EXACTLY what all that stuff on the typical "EyePhone" is. Is it feasable to seperate some of these big elements and make them seperate units which are linked by wire, or better, infrared tracking? I could propose these types of design questions all day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Which brings me to my observation. This forum has proved one of my best sources of VR info. It is nice to have an unconsidered or intriguing idea fall right in your lap rather after you have been constantly tracking down everything yourself. Gotta run, Thanks, Bill C.
