From: clarinews@clarinet.com (UPI) Subject: APPS: Medical learning in 3D worlds Date: Mon, 30 Nov 92 8:47:38 PST Clarinet, the copyrighted online information service, reports that U of Illinois researchers have created a means of taking three- dimensional tours of the human body. Heading the project is Thomas DeFanti, co-director of the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois-Chicago. According to DeFanti, the CAVE, an inclusive virtual world display, can be adapted to allow students to see from inside the chambers of the heart or to watch the way cancer cells divide and multiply within a tumor. DeFanti said programs already have been developed showing how neurons in the brain are fired in response to stimuli, displaying the anatomy of the human brain as a tool for planning brain surgery and showing the complete anatomy of a human fetus.
