From: pat@jupiter.risc.rockwell.com (Pete Tinker) Subject: Re: CONF: 2nd Industry Symposium on Virtual Worlds Technology, **REVIEW Date: Tue, 8 Dec 92 16:08:11 GMT Organization: Rockwell International Science Center I'd like to clear the air a bit concerning the Kopin display technology. I can't say much, but since Alan Peterson put a lot of thought and effort into his welcome discussion, here's some more grist for the mill. As of a few weeks ago, Rockwell International negotiated with Kopin an agreement that, among other things, gives Rockwell exclusive manufacturing rights to Kopin's "Smart Slide" technology (this is primarily what Kopin's Jeff Jacobson spoke of at the HITL symposium). Note that this is just one of several display technologies Kopin has developed. My understanding is that Kopin retains rights to all head-mounted display applications of the technology; Rockwell simply builds the displays, and in addition has rights to all "transportation" applications, and rights of first refusal to other applications. The displays will be fabricated at Rockwell's Digital Communications Division (DCD), which among other things builds the well-known Rockwell fax modem chip set. Price per unit depends heavily on volume production, and it is too early to say how much each display will cost; $55 is ball-park only. Rockwell-built displays will not be on the market in the next few months, but possibly in less than one year. (I hope to have some for my lab by June). The Rockwell Science Center (Rockwell's research division) will also be capable of producing displays and will concentrate oon low-volume custom displays. Please contact me if you'd like more information. -- Pete Tinker (pat@risc.rockwell.com) Science Center, Rockwell International Corporation (805) 373-4268
