There is a large body of literature discussing exactly that problem.
There are many ways to project higher dimentional spaces into lower
dimentional spaces.

I've seen an application which represented groups of articles from a news
service in a virtual space through which you could move.  It was very
impressive.  I'm sending a note to the developer to encourage him to
join this discussion.
