Subject: How do we advance the state of the art?

I'm relatively new to the Internet Virtual Reality scene, but already
it seems that there's quite a bit of interest in the field, both from
a technical and philosophical perspective, that remains completely
untapped. This hidden reservoir of bright-eyed undergraduates and
professional programmers has quite a bit going for it -- willingness,
intelligence, vocality, etcetera. But there don't seem to be very
many magazines, newsletters, positions, assistantships, or other
forums available for these people to really dive headfirst into what
may prove to be an incredible field. As a result, we trail over the
surface like waterspiders. Have you, or anyone else, given any thought
to organizing interested parties, incorporating them, challenging
universities to provide for them, or rallying them together into
the public eye? If so, I'd like more information, both as a writer
whose interests lie in delivering information to the public and as
a computer scientist/philosopher who would like to delve deeper into
virtual reality research.
