They work nicely, but the apparent field of view is quite small-- it's like looking through a couple of toilet paper tubes-- about 20 degrees, as I recall. In some conference proceedings I read, someone in the military looked at using telescope eyepieces instead of the optics of the monitor to get a wider field of view.
