Kreuger's work has already been mentioned, but let's not forget the Vivid
Effects MANDALA system which uses a camera for input, capturing the body
outline.  This outline is then rendered into a software-generated scene.

The whole thing runs on an Amiga or Mac and is remarkably low-cost.
The system has been demonstrated at the CHI'90 and '91 Interactive
Experiences (as well as a number of other places).
