INFORMATIQUE 92:
INTERFACE TO REAL & VIRTUAL WORLDS

March 23-27, 1992
Montpellier, France

Information technology & the five senses
-------------------------------------

	Communication between man and machines, whether these take
the form of computers, manufacturing systems or automatic control
instruments, now holds an original and important place in the
development of industrial products, hard goods, and the service
industries.

	Although recent technical progress in electronics, computer
systems and electromechanics has enabled laboratory prototypes to
become completed products, the technical possibilities concerned
remain relatively unfamiliar to engineers and even more so to the
general public. Another aspect concerns essentially the multi-
disciplinary nature of the techniques involved; indeed, man-machine
interfaces represent a focal point for such often remote disciplines
as electronics, computer science, artificial intelligence, signal
processing, the neural sciences, language sciences and linguistics
engineering, control engineering and ergonomics.

	In order to gain a better understanding and greater knowledge
of these techniques and their practical short- and medium-term
applications, Montpellier LR Technopole and the EC2 company are
organizing an event entitled, "Interface to Real & Virtual Worlds,"
devoted to those themes which are strongly represented in the work
of researchers and engineers at Montpellier, which has itself become
a focus for technological industries.

	Comprising a number of technical and scientific conferences, a
series of tutorials providing an introduction to or indepth study of
the subject and an exhibition of commercially available products,
the international event will be held at the Corum de Montpellier
from March 23-27, 1992. French will be the official working
language; simultaneous translation will be provided.

	The program, to be drawn up by a committee of internationally
renowned experts from both research and industry, will include the
following themes and will cover both the tools and techniques used
as well as their applications in various professional sectors:

TOOLS & TECHNIQUES

	* Speech recognition and synthesis
	* Natural language processing (understanding, translation,
		composition)
	* Speech-to-text translation
	* Computer-aided vision
	* Image interpretation and processing
	* Image synthesis
	* Sensors (strengths, odours, taste, touch, proximity...)
	* Head-mounted displays
	* Artificial muscles, artificial noses, artificial skin
	* Graphic interfaces, interface standards
	* Touch-sensitive screens
	* Computer notebooks
	* Multi-agent and multimedia communications
	* Multi-agent interface architectures
	* Designation by gesture and vision
	* Multimedia servers
	* Three-dimensional visual and acoustic environments
	* Ethology
	* CAD for movements and behaviours
	* Artificial intelligence techniques
	* Neural network models
	* ASIC
	* Other

APPLICATIONS

	All fields of application, from any professional sector, are
eligible, particularly those in the following (non-exhaustive) list:

	* Integrated manufacturing automation, CAD, robotics
	* Stock management, logistics
	* Quality control, maintenance, technical diagnosis
	* Vocal, visual or gestural command
	* Cursive handwriting recognition
	* Office automation
	* Authentification
	* Computer-aided instruction and training
	* Simulation and automation
	* Telephone directory inquiries
	* Computerized guides
	* Groupware (computer conferencing, structured
		communications, computer-supported cooperative
		work, collective document drafting and revision,
		electronic conversation, group decision support
		systems...)
	* Musical accompaniment
	* Interactive video
	* Assistance for the disabled

Instructions
-----------

	Seven copies of submitted papers (approximately 14 pages in
A4 ,camera-ready) to the Secretariat of Informatique 92 at the
addresses below by NOVEMBER 12, 1991.

	Submitted papers should cover:

	* The title of the paper and the author's name, address, phone
		number and, if possible, telex and fax number. [No
		email?!]
	* A 10-line abstract together with a list of keywords.
	* An indication of which of the following categories the
		paper should be included within: Technology & Tools
		or Applications.

	All papers received will be referred by an expert committee,
and each paper will be reviewed by resident referees. Authors will
receive the committee's decision by January 6, 1992. Accepted
papers will be published in proceedings to be distributed to the
participants at the event.

Prizes
------

	Several best papers will be presented with prizes.

Tutorials and Panels
------------------

	The technical conferences will be complemented by tutorials
and panel sessions. Given by internationally renowed experts, they
will be held on March 23-24, 1992. The tutorials will discuss tools
and techniques for man-machine interfaces, specific basic
techniques, or state-of-the-art areas. Send suggestions for topics
regarding tutorials to the Secretariat of Informatique 92.

Exhibition
---------

	From March 24 to March 27, 1992, the Corum will be the site
for exhibitions of commercially available products including
scientific tools relating to the conference themes and accompanying
sectional areas. In addition, advanced prototypes developed by
research organizations will also be on display.

	To receive the complete exhibitor's package, contract the
Secretariat of Informatique 92.

	[The notice I have has blurred information pertaining to the
fees and other important items. I can make out a full-event fare of
FF4,800; there are lesser options.]
