The issue of entering other poeples minds through virtual reality links was 
tackled extensively in Greg Bear's "Queen of Angels".

  The technique was used to find investigate mental problems that the patients
doctors could travel. The landscape was populated by the patient's different
personalities and talents etc. For more, read the book!!!
