Icontact is a dance theatre company, formed in Ireland by electronic music composer Roger Doyle and choreographer Snaggy O'Sullivan, which springs from their desire for the total fusion of music and dance, harnessing new technology as a means to generate innovative ideas in the field of interactive media. Icontact's debut performance in the 1990 Dublin Theatre Festival - a complete, real-time integration of music, dance and manipulated video imagery driven via a computer-generated icon map "within" the dance space - was an unqualified artistic success, and the response from this initial outing has confirmed their determination to continue in this vein. An interest in the potential of VR for art and performance applications is a natural outgrowth of this focus. Plans for '91 include new works for both live performance and interactive video, as well as a cooperative association with a local VR research group. A piece for television is currently in development with a major European broadcaster.
