PEDAGOGIC ON-LINE SEMINAR February 3rd - May 15th 1992 Arranged by: NKS College Center for Information Technology Services, University of Oslo Oslo, Norway Pedagogic On-line Seminar (POS) ----------------------------------- Pedagogic On-line Seminar (POS) is a seminar under the direction of NEK (Nordic Electronic Knowledge Network) and COSTEL (Course Systems for Telecommunicated Training of Trainees and Innovation Management). The seminar is arranged by USIT (University Center of Information Technology Services, University of Oslo) and NKS College. The use of computer-mediated communication in training and education is an expanding field in the Nordic countries and also elsewhere in Europe. NKS College and USIT have considerable experience in the use of computer- mediated communication in a learning process, and as a medium for communication independent of time and place. The intention with POS is to offer future consultants, teachers and educational administrators an introduction to on-line teaching in virtual classrooms (computer conferences). Objectives ----------- The participants will learn how to use the computer conferencing system PortaCOM, and aquire practical experience and theoretical knowledge connected to the field on-line teaching. Theoretical knowledge is gained by reading and discussing articles written by well-known authorities in the field. The discussions will take part in computer conferences, where persons with pedagogical and technological experience will serve as moderators. Practical experience is gained through actual use of the computer conferencing system. The participants will also act as bisitters ("lurkers") in computer conferences used by students and teachers at NKS College and USIT. At the end of the seminar conclusions and experiences will be documented in written form in a compendium. This documentation will be available for distribution. Requirements of the participants -------------------------------- The participants must have access to a PC, terminal or workstation. They must be able to connect through computer networks to the University of Oslo, where the computer conferencing system PortaCOM is available. How the seminar is carried out ------------------------------ Start: During week 6 1992, the participants will receive parts of the seminar material. Face-to-face meeting: On the 27tth and 28th of February 1992 there will be a face-to-face meeting at The University of Oslo. At this meeting, the rest of the seminar material will be distributed. The objectives of the meeting is: * The participants get to know each other. * The participants get information on on-line teaching through lectures by people with experience in the field. * The participants learn how to connect to the computer conferencing system, and about possibilities and limitations in such systems. Practical period: The practical period will last from week 10 through week 20. At the end of week 20 the participants are required to deliver their contributions to the compendium. Seminar fee ----------- The seminar fee is NOK 4200,-. This include seminar material, user access to the central computer and the computer conferencing system PortaCOM. Lunch both days at the face-to-face meeting is included. Persons responsible for the seminar ----------------------------------- Annita Fjuk (NKS College, N) Astrid E. Jenssen (USIT/UiO, N) Terje Johnsen (Instite of Informatics/UiO,N) Members of the advicory group --------------------------------- S|ren Berglund (Norrlands Informations Centrum, University of Ume}, S) Per Helmersen (USIT/UiO, N) Sisse Siggaard Jensen (Blaagaard Teacher Training College, DK) Kari Lampikoski (Institute of Marketing, SF) Anette Lorentsen (Aalborg University, DK) Jyri Manninen (University of Helsinki, SF) Mette Ringsted (Danish Institute of Technology, DK) Hanne Shapiro (Danish Institute of Technology, DK) Morten S|by (NKS/PFI/UiO, N) Ola \deg}rd (Norwegian Telecom, N) Registration form ----------------- I want to participate in the seminar: ___ I want to receive more information: ___ NAME: INSTITUTION: ADDRESS: CITY:. The project has partners from nine different European countries. It focuses on flexible learning and working at a distance in a distributed environment. In the project phase course material, workshops and courses will be developed focusing upon identified problems and constraints in technology based learning and working environments. Danish Technological Institute is the contractor and coordinator of the project. NEK ---- Numerous Nordic universities and colleges have earned an international reputation for their pioneering efforts in the field af distance education, based on computer-mediated comunication and computer networks. However, research focusing on the unique technical and pedagogical challenges facing this approach to distance education has thus far lacked coordination. NEK was conceived by researchers and staff at Aarhus Technical College, The Danish Institute of Technology, The University of Oslo and NKS College. NEK+s objectives is 1) to establish a permanent Nordic forum for computer-mediated communication in distance education and training, 2) to establish and develop a Nordic electronic knowledge network, 3) to coordinate technological and pedagogical research and development efforts within the field and 4) to design, produce and distribute course packages for the Nordic countries. NKS College ----------- October 4th. 1914 Ernst G. Mortensen startet the first Norwegian correspondence school named GNorsk KorrespondenceskoleH. In 1976 Ernst G. Mortensen Foundation was established. The purpose of the foundation is to make knowledge, education and personal development available in a flexible way. People can do their studies independent of where they live and work. NKS Ernst G. Mortensen Foundation is separated in three activities; NKS Distance education, NKS Publishing and NKS College. Together NKS Distance education and NKS College form the largest distance education institution in the Nordic countries. In 1986 NKS College started to offer studies in economy and administration, and in 1987 it was approved as a private college. NKS College has since 1989 been using the computer-conferencing system PortaCOM in their distance education studies. Today NKS College is the largest electronic university in Europe according to the number of students. During autumn 1991 NKS College has about 900 students, and 370 of these are using the computer-conferencing system as a pedagogical and social medium in the learning process. In a collaboration between USIT and NKS College it has been developed a distance education model based on highly qualified combination of pedagogy and technology. Other collaboration partners are among others, the Norwegian Telecom and the Norwegian Postal Directorate. NKS College is also one of the partners in COSTEL. Center for Information Technology Services (USIT), University of Oslo --------------------------------------------------------------------- USIT is responsible for IT-systems and networks at the University. The services is to be of assistance for improving efficiency and quality in sciences, education and procure. The IT-strategy of the University is to integrate services through workstations and backbone network to central servers and local environments. USIT works within this framework to offer services to all students and personnel at the University. External institutions can be users by application. USIT is lead by an IT-director placed directly under the University director. USIT consists of four sections and one administration. The ADB section has the responsibility for operating and developing administrative systems. The User Support section provides software services, spreads information and offers guidance and course activity. The System Engineering section has the responsibility for operation and construction of backbone network and central servers. The Development section provides research and development activities according to ongoing projects and services. Some of the project are distance education, multimedia and catalogue services.
