A couple of notes:

1) this is how we do it in fencing, but we only move in 
one dimension, and we don't track, we just connect, so it works.

2) a major problem with tracking systems is getting fast, accurate,
non-drifting numbers.  You can mark the string with some sort
of optical encoding system and get good, solid, absolute
measurements.
