The Whole Earth Review ran an article on VPL, along with some info on
two folks who hacked up a VR using an Amiga, a rudimentary position
sensor, and one of those 3-d positioning devices that looks like a
trackball.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how one could put together a
similar system?
