In regard to questions about virtual treadmill-like devices for
navigating virtual worlds, I saw something interesting in Japan. Dr.
Iwata at Tsukuba University is running a low-budget but very
interesting virtual worlds laboratory. He has a large metal frame,
about the size of a phone booth, with a universal joint and harness
suspended from the top. THe virtual explorer straps into the harness
and puts on ROLLER SKATES that are free to roll sideways as well as
forward. A nifty little low-cost device.
