I have seen a tiny color LCD screen (about 2" or so across) that Sony is
trying to sell people so they can see what their hand-held video cameras
are pointing at more clearly and adjust color, etc. I bet slapping one
of these over each ear with some mirrors and lenses to get the image into
each eye would be pretty straightforward, and you might be able to play
with hacking colors to get better 3-D imaging (I know in general you can
get nicer-looking pictures with lower resolution in color than monochrome;
whether this would assist stereoscopic imaging is something I have no idea
about).

Since the light-path from your eyes to your ears is about half a meter, I
think getting the screens magnified to take up the whole visual field might
be a trick -- as someone who knows about optics. It should be basically
the same thing as a viewfinder for a video camera, except in stereo.
