90-02/CMU From: Joseph.Bates@A.GP.CS.CMU.EDU Subject: CMU interactive fiction course Date: 18 Feb 90 06:25:55 GMT Message-ID: <16243@well.sf.ca.us> Organization: Carnegie-Mellon University, CS/RI The following is a copy of an announcement at Carnegie Mellon University, but it may be of interest to readers of these newsgroups... The Oz project in the CMU School of Computer Science is building software to support high quality interactive fiction/drama. Our research efforts include cognitive and emotional modeling for characters, computational theories of drama, and computational theories of narrative. We expect eventually to apply this technology to systems based on virtual world interfaces. This semester we are offering an informal course to introduce Oz to potential writers of interactive fiction. We expect to present roughly 6 lectures, and to work individually with writers as they create interactive worlds of their own design. The course will be small and informal. Some programming experience is required, and some creative writing experience is very desirable. A playwright or fiction writer comfortable with Lisp and capable of writing 100 line programs would be perfect, but in lieu of perfection, we are happy to hear from all interested individuals. If necessary, the size of this first offering of the course will be limited. The starting date and meeting times will depend on the participants. Our initial proposal will be to hold lectures once a week, Tuesday 12:00-1:15, beginning in early March. Interested individuals are encouraged to send a short message to Joseph.Bates@cs.cmu.edu by Monday February 26. Please include a few words on your background in programming and writing, your familiarity with interactive fiction (such as Infocom products), and indicate roughly how much time you could devote to the course each week.
