Hi Everyone!

An important game was played on IGS on Sunday afternoon; it was the 1993
USA Youth Championship Tournament final match between John Lee from Chicago
and James Chien from San Francisco.  The winner will represent the US to
play in the World Youth Championship Tournament held in August in Ottawa,
Canada.

At the end, John Lee (played as "jjsL" on that afternoon) defeated James
Chien (as "liubei") and thus became the Youth Champion of USA in 1993.
Congratulations John!

I am not authorized to show this game and announce the above news; instead,
I do it volunteerly as an IGSer. :-) "Permission to reproduce this game is

When the game started, almost no one on IGS noticed it, since there was
supposedly a "bigger" game going on.  But an IGSer "zhuge" saw this
"liubei" and became very interested (Consult your Chinese friends to find
out the relationship between the *real* Zhuge and *real* Liu Bei :-).
Zhuge's subsequent conversation with "tweet" ended up with a surprise
discovery, that this game between jjsL and liubei was a special tournament
match.

Moments later, tweet revealed the arrival of Jiang Joju 9p on IGS.  Only
then people started to gather to watch and kibitz in this game.  Still, at
the time, people were unware of the importance of the game, and all they
knew was that a professional 9p was watching this game.  As a result, the
game was another "normal" game on IGS, judging from the kibitzes -- some
comments on the game, and some irrelevant chatting (but they're always fun,
aren't they :-).  However, the game records does include a couple of
comments from Jiang 9p, and one of the strongest US amateur players, Jing
Yang, ("jy23" on IGS), actually made his "kibitzing debut" in the game. :-)

Right after the game, tweet announced the result and that winner was to
represent US in the World Youth Championships.  The two players then
actually started to replay the game, adding their comments to the
kibitzing.  Unfortunately, near the end, James Chien felt tired and did not
want to continue the replay (understandable), and they adjourned the game.
And they left.  But wait!  The replay version wouldn't be available unless
they *finished* (not leaving it adjourned) the game, right?  What a pity.

I happened watched most of the replay and barely remembered a few comments
by lyu 7d.  I editted the game record to add those comments in.

P.P.S. Also, my goal of this post it to tell the story rather than the game
itself.  It *was* the final, but it didn't necessarily represent the
highest level of US youth. :-)  As far as I understand, B didn't play too
well in the game.
