Some notes for using OPUS No. 1 (c) by Christian Bach / Jos.-Haydn-Str. 20 / 6390 Usingen OPUS No. 1 is a game where two remote controlled space glider has to find and destroy each other. The first glider is controlled by the player whereas the second one is controlled by the computer. For every hit you'll get one point to your personel point account. Before you start the game you are able to make bets with your already earned points. In the ARC-file should be the following files: START.PRG GAME.PRG GAME1.PRG LEVEL0 to LEVEL9 TEXT0 to TEXT9 EXPL1 to EXPL3 TITEL SOUND READ.ME README.TXT (this file) To start OPUS No. 1 click on the START.PRG file. This file can be put in the AUTO folder to start the game automatically. After loading, OPUS will ask for your name to open a personel points account. Then you'll be in a menue with the following options: 1. Neues Spiel To start everything new 2. Rennen Here you start the game. Your computer opponent and the race track will be choosen randomly. 3. Konto The point accounts also the highscore list 4. Wetten Do you want to bet some of your already earned points? 5. Gegner Here you can have a look on the possible computer space glider. Use the joystick to switch between the different gliders 6. Rennstrecke See all the possible race tracks Pull the joystick to the left or to the right to see the different race tracks. When pulling the joystick to the top or bottom you'll switch between the map and a short describtion about the race track. Your space glider will be controlled with both, the joystick and the mouse. These are the possible movements: Joystick left: Glider moves left Joystick right: Glider moves right Joystick up: Glider moves up Joystick down: Glider moves down Joystick up while pushing fire: Increase speed Joystick down while pushing fire: Decrease speed Left mouse button: single shot Both mouse buttons: missile shot Here are the keyboard options (optional): CAPSLOCK Targetwindow on and off ALTERNATE Pause SHIFT Music on and off Here are the screen ??? Top left Backward video camera. You'll see only something in here if the opponent glider is very close behind you. Top right Labyrinth map. Here you see a part of the whole race track your are flying in. Always have a look at this screen. The four big columns are for SPEED - SHIELDS - ENERGY - TEMPERATURE The temperature will increase when you are under fire or if you are increasing your speed. The shield-energy will decrease if you are in contact with a wall or if you are under fire by the opponent glider. There's also a little radar for the opponents glider in the upper right corner. It will show you where the computer opponent is. N = North (top) S = South (bottom) W = West (left, if you forgot) O = East (take a guess!) Right to the left of the radar is a little instrument that reports which direction you are flying. Here's a little hint: If your radar shows N-O which menas northeast try to fly first in a northern direction until the radar shows just O (east) then go to east 'till you see the glider. Sometimes the labyrint won't let you do so but this directs you in a global way to the opponent. The digits under the mainscreen will show you the position in the race track, your score and the time. Another hint for beginners: First try to fly very slow and figure out the different controls with the joystick. Later on you are able to fly like Luke Skywalker - you won't believe how fast this game is able to be!! It needs a while 'till you have a feeling for the walls and your position right to it but once you are used to it you'll get faster and faster. Always have a look to the position screen (the little one at the upper right corner). When you see the glider slow down your speed, take the mouse in your other hand and start shooting while you try to keep the glider always in front of you. In that moment be very careful with the up and down flight because you might be confused about all the vector graphics you'll see. Just move to the right and left while shooting single shots or missiles. Pause the game with the alternate screen and have a fast look at a printout of this manual to be sure about all the controls. At least: I had this game a very long time on my harddisk and played it once or twice for ten minutes and later on I thought everything is to hard to control but if you give it a third or fourth try you'll see how excellent this game really is. This is public domain as it's best and it won't be the last amazing peace of software I will upload here. Right now I'm working at a translation for a PACMAN-clone you'll soon find here on GEnie. Hope you enjoy this! Jochen Fass, El Paso P.S. O.K. because I really wanted to upload this I skipped the translation of the description of the different race tracks (labyrinths). But I'm working on that even if I think that they are really not necessary for the game. Leave me a note in my mailbox if you're interested in that. (Mail adress: J.FASS). Also I really appreciate any kind of comments to get more motivation for further uploads!!
