Safari Fonts November 20, 1990 For a long time the Macintosh (tm) world has had a strange screen font available which is called "San Francisco". What makes this font unique is that it seems to be composed of characters from many different fonts. Even more bizarre is the variation of the cap height and the baseline so that some characters are high, some are low, etc. The output resembles a "ransom note", where the abductor clipped letters from different publications and pasted them while intoxicated. Bizarre, but not unpleasant. As a display font it has its uses. A Mac PD and shareware fontographer of some renown, Hank Gillett, decided to make the font available in type 1 PostScript (tm) and thus was born "SaintFrancis". Hank's original text is included in this archive. For fun, because it is a "fun" font, the Safari Fonts (tm) design team decided to convert this type 1 font to PageStream (tm) format, and probably to Calamus (tm) format in the near future (right, Sandy?). It is being made available as freeware. Should anyone get an uncontrollable urge to donate, please send it to Hank Gillett. His address is included in his text file. I am sure he would be very suprised to receive a donation from an Atari user. Should you decide to pass this around, please enclose *ALL* documentation. Now, on with the show... The following files are included in the file named SFPC2.LZH: SFPC.TXT This file that you are now reading. SFPC.12H The PageStream (PgS) 12 point screen font. SFPC.FM The font metrics file for PgS. SFPC.DMF Printer (dot matrix) font. SFPC.PSF The postscript information file for PgS. SFPC.PFA This is the type 3 downloadable postscript font (note the change in the suffix from the usual .PS extender) - It works the same, however. The following files are included in the file SFPC3.LZH for those people who can use type 1 fonts: SFPC.TXT This file that you are now reading. SFPC.AFM A PC compatible font metrics file. Can be used with Amiga PgS 2.x, Atari PgS 2.0 (we hope soon), or with any PC application that uses .AFM's SFPC.PFB This is a downloadable type 1 postscript file to be used with the .AFM file above. The original Saint Francis font was downloaded from GEnie and converted from Mac type 1 format by Font Designer. From the resulting .ECF format, all of the rest of the files were created (except the bit-map screen font and, of course, the text files). This is a serious font design tool which deserves a close look (despite it's heafty price tag). As most of you know, PageStream 2.x will accept type 1 postscript fonts "from the shelf" and output to any supported printer. It will also output "hinted" characters to Adobe PostScript printers. And, bit-maps are not necessary since it will put outlines to the screen. If you choose not to use type 1, PgS 2.x will also create type 3 unhinted postscript "on the fly" to postscript printers from the .DMF files... no PS fonts needed. With the two separate uploads, you have your choice. BTW, the type 1 has only been tested on a PC compatible (imported into CorelDraw (tm)), it has not been tested with PgS, but we think it'll work! Please provide feedback. The enclosed files are brought to you courtesy of the Safari Fonts design team. We hope you enjoy the upcoming holidays and that you buy lots of Safari Fonts as gifts for yourself and others. Please write or call for a free color brochure of available items.
