A high speed printing utility for DeskJet printers Hardware/software requirements ------------------------------ o Amiga with at least 512K RAM, OS2.04 o DeskJet WITH RAM CARTRIDGE o the reqtools.library (libs-directory) Licence ------- All rights reserved. This shareware version is freely distributable (but limited to a max. file size of 20K). Copyright 1992 Dietmar Eilert. What is HiSpeed ? --------------- HiSpeed is a printing utility for DeskJet printers. It is quite similar to Matt Melcher's HDPrint programs ("4 pages of text to one A4 side"). It is _fast_ (4 pages/minute if you switch to HiSpeed mode). It should be a nice utility for people who have to do a lot of printing. What do you need to use this program ? ------------------------------------ Any Amiga will do if OS2.04 is available. Your DeskJet has to be equipped with a softfont cartridge (i.e. a RAM expansion card). Additionally, you need the reqtools library (FD, by Nico Francois). How does HiSpeed work ? --------------------- It is quite difficult to get high output rates with your DeskJet if you use "normal" methods (e.g. output bitmaps). This program uses softfonts to increase speed. The text is scanned for required typefaces (e.g. upright, italics), the softfonts are downloaded, the text is printed. The softfonts have been optimized (no hold time delay). Softfonts are printed with maximum printhead speed. Due to reduced font size, less time is spend for paper advance. Features -------- - easy to use workbench interface - single ore double sided printing (descending, if you want it this way) - free layout - e.g. 4*4 blocks of text (= 4 A4-pages) or 2 columns, .. - blocks are seperated by demarcation lines (optional) - important ESC-sequences are supported: Italics, LQ/EDV, Tabs, Underlines, FF, ... (ESC sequences = device independend ANSI ESC codes) - Linefeed is adjustable: 1, 1.5 or 2 - you can print more than one file ("job") simultanously - just set up the job list - HiSpeed mode: ESC sequences are recognized and removed. Output is performed as fast as possible. - PreScan is available - Two font sizes are available for output - optional page headers are possible as well as numbering of lines - .... How to operate HiSpeed ---------------------- PRINTING The files ("jobs") you want to get printed are displayed as "job list" (bottom left). You can scroll through the list using the arrow gadgets or keyboard's cursor keys. Click at the list to add new jobs. A file requester will appear. You can add more than one file by holding the shift-button down during selection. Select "SORT A" if you want have the list sorted alphabetically. Use "sort #" to sort by size. CLEAR will clear the list (surprise, surprise). Please keep in mind that jobs aren't removed automatically after printing. Start the printing job by clicking at the printer's symbol. Jobs are processed from top to bottom. You can stop printing by closing the progress-window (download mustn't be interrupted for this would confuse the printer). If you want a page header (file name, page number), just activate "PAGE HEADER". SETTINGS & UNITS Usually, you won't have change the paper dimensions. Default settings are valid for output to A4. The left border should be sufficient for perforating. Hit "RESET ALL" go get the defaults. All settings are written to HiSPeed's config-file by SAVE-CONFIG (even the position of the sleep-icon). Units are 'mm' with exeption of the block size display (the latter one informs you about the text blocks' size; units are characters). ESC-SEQUENCES Switch to HiSpeed mode or turn PERFROM ESC off if you want to ignore ESC-Sequences (and thus speed up output). If you enable FFs (form feeds), every detected FF-code (12 dez) will result in a new text block. You better have a pre-scan to estimate paper needs ! CHARACTER HEIGHT Two heights are available. You should use the "small" font if the average line width of your text files is greater than 80 characters. The "big" font looks better but block width might become too small (e.g. 80 characters if you choose a layout of two columns). SINGLE-/DOUBLE SIDED, PORT GADGETS Just have a try. Shouldn't be too difficult to understand. Registration ------------ The shareware fee - if you aren't a registered user already - is 10 DM (Europe) respectively 10 US-$ (outside Europe).
