ReadMe.1st: Last Modified 02Oct87 by J.A. Lydiatt CONTENTS This directory contains binaries, documentation, C source code, and a couple of handy script files for version 1.0 of a suite of programs that will allow you to access UseNet from your Amiga. UUPC also runs on the MacIntosh, IBM-PC, and Atari ST personal computers. This directory only contains the Amiga subset of the full UUPC, although you may find reference to the other versions in the documentation. SETUP There is more than one way to set up uupc for the Amiga. I have provided a script file called Setup in the binary directory to format a new disk, create the necessary directory structure, and copy the required binaries to ease the installation for the setup I find most convenient. The procedure assumes you have at least a two drive system, and that UUPC is to be installed in drive DF1:. If you have a different configuration, you will have to modify the Setup script accordingly. When UUPC has been installed, you will have to modify the systems file, "UUPC:usr/lib/uucp/systems", for your particular feed site. Have a look at Systems.doc in the documentation file for some guidance on how you might do this. You will also have to modify your profile, "UUPC:usr/lib/uucp/ profile" to insert the name of your feed site, and tell uupc who you are. The profile is fairly self documenting, if you already have usenet access. Note that the setup I use is different from that shown in the "all -systems" documentation. Mine avoids having to type in long directory names each time I want to view postings. The other version is closer to a unix-site setup however, so you might want to have a look at the file, "README.UU" in the sources directory if you are a unix guru. COMMENTS This version of uupc is primitive. The mail program is very primitive and I confess I don't use it to view my own mail, preferring to use an editor instead. There is no builtin capability to read the news postings at present. You can use more, less, or any editor for this purpose. I am working on a new version of the mailer using Bob Leivian's less program which I will release as soon as I can get the reply, and mail commands working satisfactorily. After that I am hoping that a lot of the mailer code can be used in a full screen version of "Rn". I have also included the file "How_to_Use" in the Binary directory. This is a working document for the feed site I use at van-bc in Vancouver, but may be of use to someone who is new to Usenet (like me) and needs to know how to use uucp and the mail program. Some of the information will not apply to your site of course.
