Here is a quick summary of the icons in this directory:

xicon          This is associated with the xicon program itself, but its
               only function when clicked on is to display some quick notes.
               The notes are contained in a separate file 'xicon_text'.
               If you move the icon to another directory, the xicon program
               itself will be moved but the text will not follow it.

README         displays this text.

Xicon_Manual   displays the complete manual for xicon (using the program
               "less" in the :C directory).  The following subsidiary
               files are required:

                          manual.desc
                          manual.script
                          :c/less

               [The icon could also have invoked "less" directly of course
               but this method illustrates some of the features you can add
               with xicon.]

what's here?   displays a complete listing of the files in this directory
               (whether or not they have an icon).  The icon can be
               moved to ANY directory on a disk and will show the
               contents of that directory, as long as ':xicon/xicon'
               exists (i.e. xicon is available in the directory
               ':xicon' on that disk.

cli here       opens a new CLI in this directory (instead of in DF0: as
               the standard 'cli' icon does).  It will operate from
               any directory as long as :xicon/xicon is available.

democommand    is a not-do-very-much command that can be used as a starting
               point for your own icons and command scripts.

less           is associated with the program file :c/less, but (like the
               xicon icon) it does not run it directly.  It invokes
               the program itself (via xicon) to display its manual.
               [Note that this icon (less.info) has NO associated file!
                The icon info could not be set up without that file, but it
                has now been moved to the :C directory.  The icon still
                works, but if you want to examine it you will have to place
                some file called "less" in this directory.]

The icons and scripts that use "less" expect to find it in the :C directory
on this disk.  If you use a different environment you will have to adjust
this.


Feel free to explore the workings of these icons (some of which are quite
complicated).  Start off by opening up the INFO display for the icon from
the WorkBench Menu, and click through the Tool Types.  You should also
look at the associated command scripts (unless there is a MODE=noscript
Tool Type!) with the TYPE command from the CLI.

The subdirectory Icon_Stuff (not reachable from the WorkBench) contains
three Public Domain utilities for creating and manipulating icons,
collected here for your convenience. (The program IconType is NOT the same
one as distributed on a previous Fish disk, but seems to do EXACTLY the
same thing...)
